Malaysia Science Challenge, 2017
The 11th of March 2017 was a day of great anticipation. The Hilton Residencies Hotel buzzed with energy, as teams of Science Students from 17 leading private, public and international schools gathered together to participate in the annual IMU ‘Science Challenge’.
They were vying for the third annual ‘ Science Challenge’, organized by the International Medical University (IMU) in Malaysia, together with Rainbow - Ryre, Sri Lanka, a subsidiary of Rainbow Institute of Communication and English.
The International Medical University (IMU) is a private, English language, health sciences university in Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia, and Malaysia’s leading private medical and healthcare university. It was established in 1992, and is active in research and teaching within medicine and healthcare with a strong international orientation.
The event was graced by dignitaries of the International Medical University, Malaysia. The team from IMU, includedProfessor Chin Bee Yoke- Associate Dean, School of Health Sciences, Dr. Ranjtha professor at IMU whose origins are in Sri Lanka and the International Marketing team of the University. Dr. Mahim Mendis and Mr. Steve Santhosh, represented Rainbow - Ryre, Sri Lanka.
The Event was organized with invigorating challenges, practical and interactive- “The most exciting thing I have ever done in my life!” - Mehak Sangani, Bishop’s College, Colombo workshops, prizes and surprises, as well as scrumptious food! b
Between the stages of the challenge, students had lots of fun as they enhanced their knowledge through practical workshops on DNA Testing and Blood Extractions. Students gained hands on experience through scientific experiments.
“This is the most exciting thing I have ever done in my life! DNA testing is the area I want to pursue” exclaimed Mehak Sangani, a senior prefect of Bishop’s College, as she enthusiastically took part in the experiments.
“I have been teaching science for a very long period. However, I too learnt many new things today. All the questions were well planned” Ms. Cheryl Cooray, Deputy Head, Gateway College Colombo said.
The Champions of the challenge, Ananda College, were awarded full scholarships to study medicine at IMU, the challenge trophy, US$ 500, medals and branded Adidas bags. The first runners up were Gateway College, Colombo. The second runners up were Gateway College, Dehiwala. They too received full scholarships, trophies, medals, and cash awards of USD300 and USD200 respectively.
“The IMU Science Challenge was a very well organized event and a great experience for the students. We look forward to attending next year too!” said Ms. Tania Bastiens, Teacher, St. Thomas’s Preparatory School.
