Informatic­s Institute of Technology wins 40 over encounter with University of Westminste­r

Informatic­s Institute of Technology (IIT) emerged winners in the inaugural 40 over cricket encounter defeating University of Westminste­r (UoW) by four wickets at the Colts grounds recently.

IIT a strong outfit with cricketers in the caliber of Sarath Asoka, Udaya Hettiarach­chi, Nisala Mendis and Krishan Dharmasena who play in the premier division exhibited their allround skills scoring an easy six wickets win with 5.1 overs to spare.

In this inaugural cricket encounter put into bat University of Westminste­r scored 190 in 39.1 overs. U. Mathews top scored with a fighting 62 was well supported by another half centurion K. Rodrigo. G. Pathirana (45) and G. Gomes (44) lent a good support in posting up a respectabl­e total of 190.

Asif Mohomed was the pick of the IIT bowlers troubling the MoU batters with his crafting left arm leg spinners capturing four wickets giving away 29 runs. Right arm medium pacie Sachin Milan making the early breakthrou­gh to make way for Mohomed to rip through the middle order.

Chasing the victory target IIT was aided by two fruitful partnershi­ps first of 41 runs for the 2nd wicket between Nikila Weerasingh­e and Shehan Kahandugod­a and a fine combinatio­n of 51 runs for

(U. Mathews 62, G. Pathirana 45, G. Gomas 44, K. Rodrigi 50, Asif Mohomed 4/29, Sachin Milan 2/38) (Nisala Mendis 42, the 4th wicket by top scorer Nisala Mendis and Pasindu Acharige enabled IIT to pass the opponents total for the loss of only six wickets.

Stylish right hander Nisala Mendis led the way with an elegant 42 runs while Pasindu Acharige (39), Nikila Weerasingh­e (30) and Sachin Milan (20 n.o.) making good contributi­on for the victors. T. Sharma and K. Rodrigo were the most successful bowlers to capture 2 for 37 and 2 for 40 respective­ly.

U. Mathews of UoW was adjudged the Best Batsman and the Best Bowler’s and the Man of the Match awards were won by Asif Mohomed and Pasindu Acharige 39, Nikila Weerasingh­e 30, Sachin Milan 20 n.o., T. Sharma 2/37, K. Rodrigo 2/40) Pasindu Acahrige of ITT for their outstandin­g performanc­es.

Prof. Alex Hughes Vice Chancellor of UoW graced the occasion as Chief Guest while Dr. Gamini Wickremasi­nghe Chairman, Infomatic Group was the Guest of Honour.
