ANC – For A Winning Career in the Corporate

- What made you enroll in a US degree program when you had the chance to enter a local university? Why did you want to complete the degree in Sri Lanka? Do you think you missed out on experience and exposure in the US? How do you describe the campus life at

Attracted by the glamorous idea of working in the corporate, even as a teenager, Glenard Leon made his education decisions wisely, taking one step closer to realizing his life and career goals. Glenard who is a former student of St. Joseph’s College, Colombo opted to study his A/Levels in Commerce stream, securing 2A, 1B and 1C passes at the A/Level examination in 2014. Instead of applying to a local university, right after his A/Levels, he enrolled in the US Degree Completion Program in Sri Lanka offered at ANC Education. Glenard is now a final year ANC student majoring in International Business, looking forward to graduate in a few months with flying colors. During his school life as well as his university life, Glenard displayed immense academic strength and talent for sports. Being a fine athlete, he played for the School Cricket Team and was part of the School Rowing Team and the Swimming Team. During his senior years, he held Captaincy of the School Rowing Team, leading his team to win the Bronze Medal for the first time in the school history at the Association of School Rowing in Asia (ASRA), an international regatta held in Dubai. At ANC, Glenard found the perfect platform to continue engaging in sports and extracurricular activities while balancing his academic studies.

Below are the excerpts from the interview with Glenard…

Considering the time you spend on a local degree and the shortcomings of the local university system, it is convenient and time saving to obtain an American degree through ANC. My father was quite persistent that I should do a US degree as US degrees are recognized globally. US degrees offer a career focused education, allowing students to develop valuable skills such as critical thinking and leadership skills. The general education component of the US degree also helps us acquire knowledge beyond our selected subject disciplines.

At ANC, students can undertake subjects during US summer holidays – which means we can complete the degree in less than three years and kick start our career ahead of our peers. Completing the degree here is not only quicker but also saves a considerable amount of money. The business degrees offered at ANC are from Northwood University (NU) which is a leading specialized business school in the US. I did not want to go all the way to America when I could obtain the same degree here in Sri Lanka.

In my case, it’s about what I wanted. I always wanted to enter the corporate in Sri Lanka. ANC collaborate with Blue-Chip companies to give ANC students the opportunity to interact with the industry professionals in the country and secure internships with those companies while studying. ANC organizes career fairs, creating an excellent platform to help us build contacts with potential employers before we step in to the job market. ANC also delivers its courses complying with the quality and standards of the US university - and ensures that students receive both academic and practical knowledge to stay on top of others in the job market. Therefore, I believe I have gained necessary experience and exposure to enter the corporate.

Since I joined ANC, I have been an active member of the Roteract Club and acting as the Social Media Director of the ANC Business Club. I am also heading the ANC Cricket Team and the Swimming Team. Annually, ANC organizes a multitude of events to get students involved in extracurricular activities to develop various skills. At one time, I took part in a charity fashion show organized by the ANC Rotaract Club which was a novel experience for me. It was a daring challenge to walk down the ramp but at the same time, it was a oneof-a-kind opportunity to give back to society.

Straight after the degree, I aspire to join the corporate – hopefully MAS Intimates (Pvt) Ltd. ANC has already introduced us to various recruiters including MAS during career fairs. Now is the time to exploit the contacts we have built. ANC also offered us direct access to enter a postgraduate business program from the University of West London (UWL) right after the BBA. This MBA can be completed entirely in Sri Lanka and I plan to do this MBA while working.
