Rs 1,891 m for sanitary facilities in schools islandwide: Akila

The Govt will entrust school principals to oversee the project of providing sanitary facilities to their schools, before the end of the year, to expedite the project, said Minister of Education (MoE) Akila Vi r a j Kariyawasa­m.

He said the move was to ensure that schools islandwide have the required toilets before year-end.

Under the project, sums varying from Rs 3 to 20 million will be allocated for the completion of the project, which will be carried out through the School Developmen­t Society (SDS).

Thirteen different models have been identified with the smallest project costing around Rs 650,000, while the highest is estimated at Rs 1.3 million.

The Govt has allocated Rs 1,891 million for the whole project, with nearly 2,000 new toilets to be constructe­d, while 10,000 toilets need repairs.

In addition, a project to provide water and electricit­y to schools also has been proposed. Informatio­n is being collected to implement the project.
