Southern Prov. tops O/L 2016 for 3rd year running; Western 2nd

The Southern Province (SP) topped the GCE Ordinary Level (O/L) performanc­e for the third consecutiv­e year, surpassing the Western Province, the analysis of the results revealed.

The SP, while coming out on top, improved its 'Pass' rate and reduced its 'Fail' rate, compared with the previous year.

Last year 76.66% or 26,828 students who sat for 5 or more subjects, qualified for the A/Ls, while only 1.86% or 650 students failed. In 2015, the 'Pass' rate was 75.21%, while the 'Fail' rate was 2.07%.

The WP had a 'Pass' rate of 72.92% or, 54,994 candidates, of their 75,414 who sat for 5 or more subjects, while their 'Fail' rate was 3%.

Sabaragamu­wa Province was 3rd with a 'Pass' rate of 70.80%, closely followed by North Western with 70.63%, with Central, Uva, North Central, Eastern and Northern (60.66%) in descending order.
