Additional members of the delegation should be requested by the Country Representative to the Local Organizing Committee (LOC). The LOC will provide a procedure for processing these requests. Every year the secretary of the Steering Committee (SC) draws up a list of countries that have the right to be invited to send a delegation to the ICYS. This list shall be officially sent to the Local Organizing Committee (LOC) within 2 months after the last Conference. Countries who are interested in sending a delegation and who had no contact with any previous ICYS should first send an observer to the next Conference. All members of the SC have the right to be invited as individuals by the LOC of the host country. In 2016, Sri Lanka had the opportunity to participate the 23rd International Conference of Young Scientists which was held at Rumania only as an observer.

In 2016, Ministry of Education, Sri Lanka selected best sixteen research projects up to provincial level in order to send top six research projects to national level. Only two research projects from the national level competition have been selected for the ICYS 2017 which had reached the international standards. Rakindu’s research project was one of the two best projects selected at national scale.

In addition, Rakindu Wickramarathne has won the first place at the “Science Research Project Competition-2016” organized by National Science Foundation along with the Junior Science Conference-2016. His research work was supervised by Dr. S.M.W. Ranwala (Senior Lecturer,Department of Plant Sciences, University of Colombo), Dr. Anil Samaranayake (Deputy Provincial Director of Health Services, Western Province), Mrs. P.G.S.M. De Silva (Research officer, Medical Research Institute) and Mr. Keerthi Wickramarathne (Senior Medical Laboratory Technologist, Medical Research Institute).

Rakindu Wickramarathne extends his gratitude to Prof. K.M. Nalin De Silva and Mrs. A. D. M. Damayanthi (Sri Lanka Institute of Nano Technology), Research Staff of National Science Foundation of Sri Lanka, Mrs. Upeksha Abeysekara (Teacher-in-charge of the research forum of Nalanda College), Mr. Thilak Wasthuheva (The present principal of Nalanda College), Mr.Ranjith Jayasundara (The former principal of Nalanda College), Mrs. Pramitha Galappatthi (Class teacher) and the staff of Nalanda College as well as Rakindu’s parents for their every kind of support, guidance and inspiration towards his scientific works. Rakindu also thanks Mr. M.P.Vipulasena (Director of Science Division), Mrs. Nazriya and Mrs. C.D. Rathnaweera (Science Division) of Ministry of Education for their assistance in making his research work successful.

Rakindu’s achievement is a special recognition to Sri Lanka since this is the very first time Sri Lanka had the opportunity to send competitors for the International Conference of Young Scientists. This will be an excellent entry to future Sri Lankan young scientists to hold their identity within the international science community.
