Exciting play at SSC Cricket Carnival
The first final match of the SSC Cricket Carnival took place last Saturday at the SSC Grounds between SSC Cubs ‘A’ and ‘B’ under 10s. The carnival is been conducted in four age group categories – Under 10, Under 13, Under 15 and over 15. SSC Cubs ‘A’ was led by Chrishen Warnasuriya while Nikith Ramanayake led the Under Cubs ‘B’ team. In this keenly contested encounter the interest and the application was on a high standard as both teams maintained the true traditions of the game. A lot of high Fives and Fist Bumps were seen on the field as both sides took the field with an aim to win the Under 10 supremacy.
Batting first Cubs ‘A’ scored 86 runs for the loss of nine wickets in their allotted 25 overs. Cubs ‘B’ skipper and opening right arm bowler Nikitha Ramanayake bowled his heart out to capture 5 for 15 troubled the opposing batsmen and was supported by off spinner Anuk Mirando (2 for 5). Pasindu Bimsara top scored with a steady 25 while Abisha Perera contributed with 14.
Cubs ‘B’ started their innings chasing the victory target on the wrong foot as Cubs ‘A’ captain Chrishane Warnasuriya capturing three wickets in his first over and when the scoreboard read 6 for 25 in walked Mario Fernandopulle who took a good look at the bowling and combined with Sithula Wickrematunga to repair the damage and pull their side out of trouble. While Fernandopulle played some elegant strokes on both sides of the wicket Wickrematunga played the sheet anchor role and were involved in a 7th wicket partnership of 46 runs taking the side in sight of victory. Fernandopulle top scored with 29 (five hits to the ropes facing 34 deliveries) and Wickrematunga was unbeaten on 12 when Chenul Withnachchi made a quick11 to reach the victory target for the loss of seven wickets with 5.1 overs to spare. Skipper Warnasuriya finished with a 5 wicket haul.
