Trinity, Royal, St. Joseph's, St. Peter's win their Rugby games
Trinity, Royal, St. Joseph's and St. Peter's recorded wins in their respective second round Cup Segment matches of the Singer Schools Under-20 Rugby League Championship yesterday. The most thrilling encounter of all was the battle between Trinity and Isipathana played at Pallakele, where the hosts recorded an enthralling 15-10 win. At halftime Trinity led 12-5 and went on to score their points from two tries, a conversion and a penalty. Isipathana was held at bay all the time by Trinity as the visitors scored off two unconverted tries.
Royal staged a gallant comeback in the second half after trailing 7-9 at halftime to beat Wesley by 35-19 at Royal Sports Complex. Royal scored from five converted tries while Wesley, who played their hearts out, scored from two unconverted tries and three penalties.
St. Joseph's dominated the first half to beat S. Thomas' by 26-12 and claim the Lady Jayatilleke Shield at Havelock Park. The Josephians were dominant from the first whistle as they scored all their points in the first half through four tries and three conversions. At halftime the winners led 26-7. The Thomians prevented their opponents from scoring a single point in the second half as they collected their points through two tries and a conversion.
St. Peter's travelled to Maradana to beat Zahira 43-16 after a close first half battle. Zahira led the game throughout the first half until the Peterites broke loose to take the halftime lead by 12-9. St. Peter's retaliated after the turnaround and went on to score from seven tries and four conversions to Zahira's converted try and three penalties.
