NSBM Green University Town celebrated Vesak 2017, opening with a Pirith ceremony and an alms giving to the Bhikkus, completed with a display of Vesak Lanterns, Pandals, Dansals and singing of Buddhist hymns - a “Bhakthi Geetha” show at the University Town premises in Pitipana, Homagama, aptly named “Saddharmaloka Vesak Zone”. The Buddhist society unveiled a Buddha statue at the University entrance earlier last week, and the Green movement along with the Buddhist society and students of all the batches created and built the Vesak lanterns, which underwent a competition as well. The lanterns and Pandals were available for the public display. A group of Bhikkus, headed by most reverend Iththapane Dhammalankara Thera chanted Pirith for the Pirith ceremony. The Honorable Secretary to the ministry of Skills Development and vocational Training, Mr. P Ranepura graced the event as the chief guest, with many ministry and provisional administrative officials. Vice Chancellor of the NSBM Green University Town, Dr. E. A. Weerasinghe, Director- Operations Mr. Chaminda Rathnayake, along with Deans of Faculties, academic and non-academic staff, students and parents were present to witness the Pirith ceremony and associated activities. Students of all batches, ages and religions participated in the commemoration of the Birth, Enlightenment and Passing Away of the Lord Buddha. The dansals were sponsored by the students and various commercial establishments and served several sorts of food. The NSBM Green Campus is the first and the only sustainable initiative in South Asia and has the capacity to host 30,000 undergraduates at a given time. Currently there are 9,000 students following Management, Computing and Design Studies Degree programmes. NSBM offers local-UGC approved degree programmes as well as degrees from Foreign Universities in UK, Australia, Ireland and Malaysia
