Mahamaya Kandy and Ananda emerge overall swim champs

Mahamaya Girls College, Kandy and Ananda College, Colombo emerged Overall Champions in the Girls and Boys categories at the Junior (Under 19) Aquatic Championsh­ip 2017 held at the Sugathadas­a Stadium Swimming Complex recently.

The Individual Championsh­ips J. U. I. Silva of Mahamaya College, Kandy and P. Arukshan of Killer Whales Aquatics were adjudged Champion swimmers in the Women’s and Men’s events with 22 and 19 points respective­ly.

Mahamaya Girls College scoring 251 points qualified to win the Overall Championsh­ip in the Girls section ahead of Sirimavo Bandaranai­ke Balika Vidyalaya ( 221 points) and Visakha Vidyalaya, Colombo (209 points) while Ananda College, Colombo scoring 249 points finished at the top in the Boys section ahead of St. Joseph’s College, Colombo ( 207 points) and Lyceum Internatio­nal School, Wattala (129 points).

J.U.I. Silva for her outstandin­g performanc­es in winning the Girls Under 19 400 Metre Freestyle, 1500m Freestyle, 800m Freestyle and 400m IM won the Girls Individual Championsh­ip and Pavalachan­dran Arukshan emerged the Individual Championsh­ip in the Men’s category for winning Boys Under 19 200m IM and Under 19 400 LC metre IM events.

Sri Lanka Aquatic Sports Union ( SLASU) rearranged its age group structure to be in line with the internatio­nal events structure. Keeping with the new age group structure, an event titled ‘Junior National under 19 Championsh­ip was introduced this year. With the intention of increasing the overall standard of the competitio­n, only swimmers who obtained the National Qualificat­ion cut-off time were allowed to participat­e in this event. – LR; Pix AG
