Close call, but Ananda prevail

Ananda prevailed over Thurstan in another thrilling encounter of the Milo U20 Premier Trophy inter-schools rugby knockout tournament when they recorded a close 30-27 in the semi-final played in the afternoon session at the Sugathadas­a Stadium.

This close match saw Ananda sealing the game in the dying stages having taken a three point lead through an unconverte­d try scored by D. Ratnaweera. Ananda having led 13- 10 at the breather accumulate­d their points through a goal, four tries and a penalty to the two goals, two tries and a penalty scored by Thurstan.

For Ananda M. Mendis, K. Perera, S. Wi j e yasinghe, Y. Suwaris and D. Ratnaweera scored the tries with S. Tillekerat­ne booting over the penalty and conversion while Thurstan’s try scorers were K. Haputhanth­rige who went over for two tries and one each by T. Rabel and N. Devinda while N. Dharmadasa put over the conversion­s and G. Chamara booting over the penalty.

Ananda will now meet the winners of the second semi-final between St Benedict’s and Maliyadeva scheduled to be played in the afternoon session today. Referee – A. Shantha
