- University Information: Next Intake:

The world doesn’t need one more person trying to fit into a cast made for another. What it really needs is more people willing and daring to follow their dreams. Each one places great value in their life’s path and pursues it with diligence. Not all make it to the top of the hill but the few that do, have beautiful tales of endurance and commitment that will inspire all.

Shenali’s first inspiration came from her sister. She loved to listen to her and to learn from her and was determined to one day, be a doctor just like her.

Below are the excerpts from the interview with ShenaliKumarasiri …

WHY DID YOU CHOOSE TO PURSUE MEDICINE?

That’s an easy one. I have always looked up to my sister and mimicked her since I was a toddler. My love for medicine comes from wanting to be just like her and I am glad that I am able to be in par with her professionally. She has always been my rock and continues to support me, having her by my side is one of my greatest strengths. I firmly believe my achievements are hers as they are mine and I am forever grateful to her for having my back.

HOW WERE YOU REFERRED TO ANC - PATHE Study Medicine?

It was mostly through printed media and thereafter, I referred them online. I did make the effort to do my take on Sherlock Holmes on them and I was not able to dig up any dirt. Now having befriended them, I know for sure that there are no skeletons in the closet.

WHY DO YOU THINK MMMC IS THE RIGHT CHOICE TO MAKE?

The preference is actually passed down, it’s almost a tradition among Sri Lankan students who opt for international placements. Where else can one receive a great education so close to home? It is one of the favored destination for medical students from around the world. This fact is evident as MMMC houses students from over a decade.

The MMMC programme offers the best of two worlds- a solid foundation in basic science in the campus in India, and comprehensive clinical training in Malaysia. It prepares students to be in par with the global competition. So I now have the option to continue my education here in India or transfer my credits to Malaysia and that in my opinion, is an amazing prospect to a student of any industry.

YOUR THOUGHTS ON MMMC AS A STUDENT?

Manipal not only delivers an enriching learning experience but also has various recreational facilities such as a swimming pool, squash court, tennis court, basketball court, futsal court and fitness centre to promote and encourage a healthy lifestyle. We students often attend the local cinemas and tourist attractions or organize events for ourselves. This provides a window of opportunity to make new acquaintances as well as being a diversion from the books.

WHAT IS THE SIGNIFICANT FACTOR THAT MAKES ANC - PATHE STUDY MEDICINE, A PLEASANT EXPERIENCE?

An organization will only ever be good as its people. They are the representation of the institute and what it stands for. It is important that they play their cards right in order for each customer not to be merely considered as a ‘’transaction’’ but a person. I received such a service and more from my student counselor, Naushad Meedin who was an absolute delight to work with. He knew inside out of a procedure that dragged for many months and it brought great relief to have a reliable contact to speak to.

WHAT IS YOUR ADVICE TO SOMEONE CONSIDERING OVERSEAS EDUCATION?

Being organized is key. A university is a complete contrast to being a student at school and one of the real challenges is organizing your work and activities. You can no longer rely on your parents to keep a calendar of everything that’s going on, instead you must sort things for yourself. There are new time zones and weather conditions to be accustomed to while juggling lectures and concerned calls from back home. So if you do keep in line with a realistic time table you set for yourself you will be saving yourself a lot of trouble.

FUTURE ASPIRATIONS?

Being a medical student puts you in a very privileged position, among the very top students across the country. I am humbled that I have made the journey so far and intend to serve my community to the best of my ability.
