SLIIT’s Faculty of Engineering delivers high quality teaching and research across all engineering disciplines

-

The Faculty of Engineering at SLIIT, the country’s premier degree awarding institute is recognised locally as a vibrant teaching and research entity offering a highly interdisciplinary environment for youth to explore the frontiers of engineering.

Helping the students harness engineering technologies is Dr. Nimsiri Abhayasinghe, Head, Department of Electrical and Computer Engineering, Faculty of Engineering.

Dr. Abhayasinghe’s credentials are impressive - having completed both his Bachelor of Science of Engineering (Honours) (B.Sc. Eng.) and Master of Science (M.Sc.) from the University of Moratuwa, he received his Doctorate (Ph.D.) from Curtin University, Australia.

A respected researcher in Gait Analysis and Assistive Technology, Dr. Abhayasinghe has worked as an academic in several leading universities, including Curtin University and the University of Moratuwa.

For his outstanding promise shown in research Dr. Abhayasinghe received an Asian Development Bank (ADB) scholarship for his M. Sc. studies and for excelling at his Advanced Level examination received a Mahapola Merit Higher Education Scholarship for undergraduate studies.

Commenting on the Faculty Dr. Abhayasinghe said, “At the SLIIT Faculty of Engineering, we are dedicated to training the next generation of youth and hopefully leaders to explore the frontiers of engineering to become innovators who make a significant impact in their chosen careers.”

Dr. Abhayasinghe began his career at SLIIT as a visiting lecturer in 2009. In 2010 he was named the Senior Lecturer at the Department of Electronic and Computer Engineering culminating in being appointed as the Head of the Department in 2016.

“Creating and integrating engineering learnings into real world experiences is a challenge faced by young engineers. Training a new generation of young engineers’ demands charismatic leadership. It will help students to learn things at the onset of their academic life and we at SLIIT are ready to promote this through our programmes. Our goal is to introduce new concepts that will help students coagulate their knowledge both in terms of academic and practical aspects”.

Dr. Abhayasinghe has authored a wide range of publications and received recognition for numerous research projects. He is also wellversed in conducting workshops - helping pre-university students further their knowledge and as a resource person assisting many organizations.

Engineering is core to many solutions and challenges we face. Providing our students interdisciplinary research and education in Engineering will have a significant impact in creating a learning environment outside the conventional constraints of an engineering education, Dr. Abhayasinghe noted.
