Bugged Railway guards' work stoppage delays trains
A protest by Railway guards over infestation of bed bugs in their living quarters, railway stations and compartments, delayed trains for over two hours yesterday.
The guards demanded their quarters, the stations and compartments be cleaned, and warned of further trade union action if no action was taken.
General ManagerRailways, B.M.P. Ariyaratne said he will inquire about the complaint and initiate action to clean the place.
Railway Guards Association General Secretary P.M.P Peiris told the Sunday Times, they have been complaining to the
Railway authorities about a bed bug outbreak on their beds, six months ago, but no action was taken.
He explained that Railway guards are restless in the nights because swarms of bugs are biting them during the night.
"Now the infestation had increased to the point where the bugs have spread to the train engine seats, guard rooms of trains and compartments of long distance trains.
