Sharmal retains Men’s Singles title

Top seeded Sharmal Dissanayak­e kept composure and outclassed third seeded Sankha Athukorala to retain the Men’s Open Singles title with a convincing win in the final of the 102nd National Tennis Championsh­ip at the SLTA tennis courts in Greenpath, Colombo.

Marauding Sharmal was too good for his opponent as he cruised through to victory with identical scores of 6-0, 6-0 in the three set finale.

Wenuka Kithnula beat Vichinthya Nilaweera 2-0 (6/0, 6/1).

Heshani Imanga beat Dinethya Dharmaratn­e 2-0 (6/0, 6/0).

Chathurya Nilaweera beat Prasanjith Kannangara 2-1 (7/6(3), 2/6, 6/2).

Anjalika Perera beat Oneli Perera 2-0 (6/1, 6/2). hopes were shattered.

Meanwhile in the junior national championsh­ip which is played concurrent- ly saw top seeded players in the Under-12 and 14 age group of both boys and girls categories lifting the title.

In the boy’s Under-12 Wenuka Kithnula coasted to an easy win over Vichithya Nilaweera while Heshani Imanga overcame Dinethya Dharmaratn­e to take the girl’s title. Both were absorbing affairs.

However, in the boy’s Under-14 category top seeded Chathurya Nilaweera was given some anxious moments before he managed to get the better of Prasanjith Kannangara to emerge champion and Anjalika Perera emerged the winner of the girl’s category of this age group defeating Oneli Perera.
