Sri Lankan PhD Student at La Trobe University, Australia wins the Global Prize… for Bioinformatics

Malathi Sajeewani talks about her achievement….

Criteria to win it

“In partnership with the Centre for Systems Genomics at the University of Melbourne, The Australian Regenerative Medicine Institute at Monash University & Melbourne Bioinformatics, Thinkable launched the inaugural ‘ Peer Prize’ for bioinformatics. The objective was to accelerate wider knowledge exchange & drive multi- disciplinary collaboration with the latest bioinformatics research from around the world, while celebrating the most exciting new discoveries made in the field as voted by peers.”

Benefit of Bioinformatics in the Future

“Genes are the blueprint for life. They contain all the information about an organism. The bioinformatics enable us to extract that information from genes and analyze them to extend our understanding of disease conditions, gene functions, biological pathways and system-level properties of the organism. The gene expression analysis has potential to discover changes in genes due to diseases such as cancers. Those genes, which act differently against some diseases often refer as the drug targets to develop new drugs and treatment for a disease. Here we proposed a computational algorithm, which utilizes the prior knowledge of biological networks and offer biologists with a viable, more powerful alternative when detecting differentially expressed genes from genomic data”.

A message to Sri Lankan students seeking an overseas education qualification…

“A Masters or PhD degree is an advanced learning program that allows you to explore a research topic related to a specific area. Under the supervision of world- class researchers, you learn and use advanced research techniques to create and discover new approaches and methodologies as solutions for real world problems. Completing a research degree makes you an expert in the particular field as you focus on an interesting topic, explore and solve practical challenges, and convey your discoveries.

Having a La Trobe scholarship that pays for my education and living expenses was a great support for my studies. The peaceful and relaxed working environment helps me to enhance my studies without any tension. The academic professionals are very supportive and always guides the students. La Trobe provides me an opportunity to network with many International staff and students. Since Australia is a multi-ethnic cultural country, I feel I am close to home.

“If you are planning to study overseas, choose a study program which will be the best fit for your career goals and select a university with a higher International profile. I believe the international reputation and the quality of the degree will help you to find a better job.”

Before going for her Phd Studies to Australia

“Science and Mathematics have been my fascination right from my childhood, and I was keen to continue my academic pursuit in this field to turn out my interests and dreams into a reality.

I wanted to be a part of the existing race to create a more scientifically advanced tomorrow and I envisaged my graduate studies as a path towards my advancement in this direction. My career objective is to become an active Academic University staff member as I have the passion for learning new concepts, theories and principles to pursue a career and acquire global skills to improve intercultural relations in culturally mixed classrooms.

I have successfully completed my graduate studies in Sri Lanka, at the Department of Statistics, Faculty of Science, University of Colombo by acquiring a Bachelor of Science ( Hons) degree in Statistics with a first class in year 2013. After the final year of research, I acquired a strong interest in Applied Statistics. I won a Runner- up award for the best undergraduate research project in 2013 from the Institute of Applied Statistics, Sri Lanka (IASSL).

I worked as an Assistant Lecturer at the Department of Statistics, University of Colombo, Sri Lanka and was a lecturer for Quality control and Statistical Process Control for third to fourth year students. During my tenure, I also worked as an Analyst and a Report Writer for the Employability Study of Grandaunts for the year 2012, carried out by the Higher Education for the 21st century Project ( HETC) in collaboration with the World Bank and Ministry of Higher Education of Sri Lanka.”
