Invitation: Deakin University, School Of Engineering Organized ‘Zero Enery Building Engineering Design Competition For Schools
Energy resources are being depleted at increasing rates. Zero energy buildings offer significant contributions toward sustainable resource management. Zero energy or net-zero energy buildings are modern constructions of buildings where the net energy consumed over a year is zero.
In this competition students are asked to provide a design of a zero energy family dwelling unit for a suburb in Colombo. Conceptual (incorporating ideas or qualitative descriptions) level designs are acceptable. They may include some calculations in their design; however, this is not a requirement. The design should demonstrate an understanding of what is civil, electrical and power engineering, mechanical engineering and control engineering and how these aspects of engineering play a significant role in the design of a zero energy dwelling unit.
The design is to be a submitted as a 20 minute video presentation. Participants are free to choose the type media/software/app to use for their presentation, however videos should be in PC Windows or Macintosh compatible formats.
Judging criteria:
Explicitly mention the main difference between civil engineering, electrical and power engineering, control engineering and mechanical engineering, in the context of designing a zero energy dwelling unit Explain how aspects of civil engineering (e.g. structure, construction materials, etc.), electrical and power engineering (e.g. energy usage, generation, etc. ), control engineering (e.g. automation, monitoring, etc. ), and mechanical engineering (e.g. heating and cooling requirements, ventilation, etc. ) are incorporated in the design Innovation, creativity and functionality of design Was the presentation wellrehearsed? Is/Are the speaker/s able to capture the attention of the listener? Was the presentation delivered without a script? Were slides, visual aids, etc. well prepared?
Use of technology (20%):
Use of software to visualize their design Appropriate use of presentation software Limited to 5 participants. Participants must be from the same school and comprise at least 4 students. The remaining member can either be a student or a teacher. Teachers can only participate in a supervisory capacity. All participating teams are invited to an award ceremony in Sep 2017 where the winning teams will be announced. The date and venue will be announced closer to the award ceremony. All entries will receive a Certificate of Participation Cash prizes of A$ 1,000 and A$ 500 will be awarded to the 1st and 2nd placed teams respectively. The top 2 entries will also receive Certificates of Commendation.
Please notify Deakin Sri Lanka Office, Email: srilanka@deakin.edu.au the intention to participate before 8 August 2017. You will then be provided instructions on how and where to upload your entries.
Closing date for uploading of videos will be 25 August 2017. David Samuel Country Director Deakin University Sri Lanka Office
