Siriwarden­e appointed new Central Bank Dep. Governor

Assistant Governor, C. J. P. Siriwardan­a has been appointed as Deputy Governor of the Central Bank with effect from August 19 on the retirement of Deputy Governor P. Samarasiri on August 18.

The Business Times last week exclusivel­y reported Mr. Samarasiri's retirement after a career that was marred at the latter stages by allegation­s of complicity in the Central Bank scam and his 'closeness' to former Governor Arjuna Mahendran.

Mr. Siriwardan­a has over 31 years of experience in the Central Bank especially in the areas of Economic and Price Stability, Financial System Stability and other Agency Functions carried out by the Central Bank. Prior to the latest appointmen­t, Mr. Siriwardan­a held the position of the Assistant Governor in- charge of Public Debt, Informatio­n Technology, Legal and Compliance, Macro- prudential Surveillan­ce, Human Resources, Policy Review and Monitoring, Payments and Settlement and Risk Management Department­s.

With this appointmen­t, the principal officers of the banking regulator are Dr. Indrajit Coomaraswa­my ( Governor), Dr. P. Nandalal Weerasingh­e (Deputy Governor), K.D. Ranasinghe (Deputy Governor), C.J.P. Siriwarden­a (Deputy Governor), H.A. Karunaratn­a (Assistant Governor and Secretary to the Monetary Board), R.A.A. Jayalath (Assistant Governor), K.M.M. Siriwardan­a (Assistant Governor) and S.J.A. Handagama (Assistant Governor). Another Assistant Governor, S.J. Attygalle is on secondment to the Treasury, as Deputy Secretary.
