Lankan Universiti­es shine at Inter-Medical School Physiology Quiz in Malaysia

While the Faculty of Medicine, Colombo, rose to victory becoming the World Champions and winning the prestigiou­s Prof. A. Raman Challenge Trophy at the 15th InterMedic­al School Physiology Quiz (IMSPQ) 2017 held in Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia, on August 16 and 17, two more teams from Sri Lanka clinched the 3rd and 5th places.

The 3rd and 5th places were secured by Medical Faculty teams from the University of Sri Jayewarden­epura and the University of Kelaniya.

One hundred and three teams from 22 countries including the United Kingdom (UK), Japan, Australia, Singapore, China and Thailand competed for the Prof. A. Raman Challenge Trophy, with Sri Lanka competing against powerful teams from the National University of Singapore, the All India Institute of Medical Sciences, New Delhi, the Charles Darwin and Flinders Universiti­es of Australia and the University of Bristol, UK. More than 460 medical students and 120 lecturers participat­ed in the quiz.

The Champions from the Colombo Medical Faculty were Poorni Fernando, Sathee Hewakurupp­u, Chamath Jayakody, Supun Prabhashwa­ra and Pamodh Yasawarden­e while the Second Runners-up from the Sri Jayewarden­epura Medical Faculty were Thilini Kulasinghe, Dulmini A medical student from the Kelaniya Medical Faculty, Kithmini Jayaweera, won Second Place out of 20 submission­s in a Physiology Art Competitio­n held parallel to the IMSPQ. De Silva, Raveesha Wanigasuri­ya, Chamodi Nissanka and Dewage Nisansala Tharangi. The Kelaniya Medical Faculty team which came 5th consisted of V.T. Martin, S.H. Dissanayak­e, F.N.M. Nasar, J.R.P. Samarathun­ga and J.A.P.H. Jayasinghe.

Meanwhile, the three-member team from the Jaffna Faculty of Medicine which came up to the quarter finals included Shanthanaa Vasanthaku­mar, Thakshana Sangaradas and Gnanapraga­sam Vaikunthan.

IMSPQ honours the late Prof. Raman, the first Malaysian Professor of Physiology and Head of Department of Physiology of Malaysia’s oldest university, University of Malaya.

It is a key event in the physiology academic calendar that enables and inspires both students and teachers to enjoy this basic science which forms the backbone of medicine. The quiz has become a model for the national physiologi­cal societies of many countries to achieve the goals of enhancing the learning and teaching of physiology.
