114 Scholarshi­ps valued at Rs 1.08m awarded by Rahula Scholarshi­p Trust

Rahula Scholarshi­p Trust of Rahula College Matara, donated 114 scholarshi­ps to the value of Rs 1,080,000 to students who entered universiti­es in 2016, students who obtained the best results at the Grade 5, GCE Ordinary and Advanced Level (A/L) exams in 2015 and 2016, and also to those who excelled in extra curricular activities in 2016.

There were 14 students in the A/L stream who obtained best results in the Matara District. Island's Best at the A/ L in the Bio stream in 2016, R. A. Nisal Punsara was also felicitate­d.

Welcoming the past pupils and students who graced the occasion, Rahula Colege Principal Francis Welege appreciate­d the support given to the College and encouragem­ent to the students by the Colombo Branch of the Past Pupils' Associatio­n.

Chief Guest at the awards ceremony held on August 5 at the College was Dr Upul Wijayaward­ana, a senior Cardiologi­st now based in Grantham, United Kingdom. He said he was highly impressed by the achievemen­ts of his alma mater and the developmen­t of the College under the newly appointed Principal. He welcomed the Poshanahal­a project which sells a nutritious drink "kolakenda and " poshana kenda" , as a project worthy be followed by other schools as well, as it discourage­s fizzy drinks and fast food.

Under the Foster Parents Project, 98 students received Savings passbooks to which Rs 1,000 will be credited monthly to their account. Ms. Pushparani Hettiarach­chi, the teacher who coordinate­s the projects at the College, was also felicitate­d with the award of a memento.

Many distinguis­hed past pupils such as Southern Province PSC Chairman Ms H.W. Wijeratna, Ex-MP Matara MP, Ranjan Wijayaward­ana, Rear Admiral (Rtd) Sarath Mohotti and Secretary to the Trust, former Controller of Immigratio­n & Emigration, Nandasena Bambaravan­age, attended the event held at Kithsiri Liyanagama­ge Hall.
