Malan steers NW University South Africa to title victory

- By M. Shamil Amit reporting from Galle

An unbeaten 46 ball knock of 64 inclusive of seven boundaries and two sixes by Jannerman Malan paved the way for North West University ( NWU) South Africa to record a comfortable seven wicket win over Business Management School ( BMS) Sri Lanka in the final of Red Bull Campus Cricket T20 World Cup to emerge champions, played at the Galle International Cricket yesterday.

BMS Sri Lanka the defending champions were aiming to repeat their performance, but they put themselves in a spot of bother in the early stages of their innings after they were asked to bat first.

BMS sides’ batting was almost similar to their semi- final encounter against UOS Australia where they lost their top four wickets for 40 runs but recovered. But in this instance they were unable to record that feat as they lost three more wickets with the score on 70 and their chances of reaching 100 runs looked bleak.

But some sensible batting by the late order and helped by extras they managed to end with a score of 121 but it proved insufficient for them to defeat.

Top scorer Malan was featured in two fruitful partnerships first of 48 runs for the second wicket with Marques Ackerman and the other an unbeaten 47 runs for the fourth wicket with Edrich Lubbe which helped them reach the target in the 16th over.
