St. Patrick’s look­ing down the bar­rel

St. Patrick’s Jaffna was set a mas­sive tar­get of 388 runs in the sec­ond ses­sion of play on day two by St. Joseph’s in their an­nual Un­der-19 Rec­tors Tro­phy cricket en­counter played at Dar­ley Road.

The Pa­tri­cians in pur­suit of the tar­get was on 35 for 3 hav­ing faced seven over and left with just un­der two ses­sions of play to save them from de­feat. Ear­lier in the day St. Joseph though hav­ing a mam­moth first in­ning lead of 247 runs opted to bat again and made a score of 140 for 6 de­clared from 35 overs with She­vaan Ra­sool mak­ing an un­beaten 56.

The open­ing day’s play saw St. Joseph in­vited to take first lease of the wicket mak­ing merry as Jo­hanne de Zilva and Sachintha Mahin­das­inghe crack­ing half tons for them to make a for­mi­da­ble score of 285 for 8 de­clared.

Later the bowl­ing duo Ashen Daniel and Du­nith Wel­lalage ran through their op­po­nents’ bat­ting as they shared nine wick­ets be­tween them to bun­dle them out for a mea­ger 38 runs.
