A great opportunity to follow the only Internationally accredited Chemistry Honours degree level programme in Sri Lanka at minimal cost

-

Institute of Chemistry is the professional organization of chemists in Sri Lanka. The chemistry professionals in Industries, Universities, research organizations and other state and non state sector organizations hold the membership of this Institute. It was founded as the Chemical Society of Ceylon 1941 and incorporated by act of parliment No. 15 of 1972 as the Institute of Chemistry Ceylon.

By act of parliment 15 of 1972 empowers the council of the Institute of Chemistry Ceylon to conduct Educational Programmes in different levels to enhance chemistry in the country.

In the secondary school level the Institute conducts the Inter school chemistry quiz competition and Royal Australian Chemistry Quiz competition to promote chemistry among school students.

The Institute conducts two tertiary educational programmes,

(1)Diploma in Laboratory Technology in Chemistry Programme (DLTC) This programme was started in 1973 and now at its 44th year. This is the only such programme in Sri Lanka towards producing middle level technical officers in the chemical laboratory sector. (2)The Graduateship Programme in Chemistry (GIC) This is a four year programme designed similar to the B.Sc special degree in Chemistry offered by Sri Lankan Uniuversities. The prime objectives of the programme are to, Cater for the need of qualified chemistry proferssionals for the Sri Lankan Scientific and Induatrial sectors Serve as an alternative path to those who cannot obtain university entrance : The number enrolled to the university courses annually is a very small percentage of the number who get qualified to enter due to lack of space, human resources and funding in the university system. Further the students who are getting qualified from international schools also do not get the opportunity of entering to state universities. Graduateship programme serves as a very standard and attractive alternative to many students as mentioned above. Serve as a path to get forward for students who get qualified in informal paths such as technical education e.g The DLTC qualification is considered as an alternative to those who do not have the GCE A/ L qualified to follow the GIC

Main features of the programme

Four years of duration and course content similar to the B.Sc special degree in Chemistry The programme is oriented towards the chemical industry of Sri lanka and Scientific service sector ( having many courses in applied chemistry in third and fourth years). So the passed out graduates get more opportunities in employment market. The programme offers research project/ Literature surevy project/ seminar presentations/ Industrial Training at the third and or fourth years.

Recognition ( local and International)

The qualification is recognized by the Sri Lankan government by the public administration circular no 334 and many other gazette notifications. Ther university grants commission has recognized the GIC qualification as an alternative qualification to a degree through its circular no 752.

The Royal Society of Chemistry (RSC) UK has accredited the GIC programme since 2012. This is the first such degree level programme accredited by RSC in South Asia.

Advantages:

Lowest total cost is in the range of Rs 700,000/= for four years. This may be the only such programme in the world. Such low fees are maintained by the efforts of the members of the Institue in accord with the non - profit policy of the Institute. Unlike the conventional universities the programme is not interrupted by any disturbances such as srikes, ragging or delays. The programme is exactly completed by four years.

Dear Sir,

Recommendation of M.Phil. Candidate: Ms. P. H Gamage

Ms. P.H. Gamage obtained the Graduateship in Chemistry Qualification in 2011, from College of Chemical Sciences, Institute of Chemistry Ceylon. She received a third class at this qualification. (This qualificationis equivalent to a B.Sc. Degree in Chemistry in standard).

Ms. Gamage was a very enthusiastic and hard working student as I knew from her first year. She involved with many co curricular activities such as debating, dancing , social services etc as well as studies.

She carried out her undergraduate research problem under supervision of myself, Prof. S. Sotheeswaran, and Mr. EG Somapala of College of Chemical sciences. The topic was “Detertmination of the presence of Metanil yellow in Termeric and sugar confectionary”. Her command in English is very good. Her interest in research is at a very high level. Therefore I rec- ommend she will be very much suitable to be registered as a postgraduate student reading for the Degree of Master of Philosophy.

Thank You Dr. USK Weliwegamage, M. ICHEMC, CCHEM Senior Lecturer, College of Chemical Sciences, Institute of Chemistry Ceylon,Rajagiriya
