“In the end, my decision was to become a Management Accountant”

-

Background

Dilip Krishnasamy studied at Trinity College in Kandy and completed his G.C.E. (A/L) in Math stream. He had to let go of his idea of joining local University since his marks were not sufficient to do so. According to what he told us, his way forward after his A/Ls was as follows:

I did my G.C.E. (A/L) in Physical Science Stream. It was mainly based on my parents’ wish. My desire was to become a Chartered Accountant. Hence, I attended AAT classes whilst reading for my A/Ls. I passed my AAT stages 1 and 2 and A/Ls at the same period of time.

Selecting CMA

After A/Ls, abandoning his dream of joining University, he had joined HSBC as a Banking Trainee. He was recruited to its Credit Division and was assigned to evaluate housing loans and personal loans. Dilip is a good example to prove that an employment or following any other course is not an obstruction to read for the CMA Examination. The organization has provided required facilities for him to read for the CMA Examination whilst performing his duties as an employee. Dilip describes this as follows:

”When I was working for HSBC I had to work in the Credit Division. My ambition was to become an Accountant. Yet, it did not take very long for me to realize that it is a very difficult task to become a Chartered Accountant whilst working in the Bank. In the meantime, I inquired about the CMA qualification. The scope for CMA Examinations is much wider. Hence, I started studying for CMA qualification. “

Dilip says that there is a vast difference between obtaining the CMA qualification and other professional qualifications.

His analysis regarding that is as follows:

“In CMA Examinations, there is a balance between the two sections of technical and practical. The scope of the curriculum is very much wider. A person who completes the CMA Examinations also acquires a thorough understanding about the Management Accounting and Management sectors etc. It is a great advantage. Such scope cannot be found in any other professional qualification. In the end, I too became a qualified Management Accountant. According to what I see, it is an extensive field. Similarly, CMA qualification can be obtained for an amount of Rs.80,000/-. Therefore, CMA is anaffordable qualification with a lesser cost. He further states that; “I completed my CMA Examination in the year 2014. Presently, I am a Member of CMA”.

National and International Recognition

Institute of Certified Management Accountants of Sri Lanka is incorporatedby an act of Parliament No 23 of 2009 as the National Professional Management Accounting Institution in Sri Lanka. Similarly, it is a Professional Management Accounting Institution recognized internationally as well. It has obtained memberships of the South Asia Federation of Accountants (SAFA) and the International Federation of Accountants (IFAC). Further, it is also a Member of the Confederation of Asian and Pacific Accountants (CAPA). Dilip analyses this national and international recognitions as follows:

The recognition CMA has nationally as well as internationally is very important. It has given us the possibility of obtaining foreign qualifications easily. As a result, in order to obtain ACCA qualification, we only have to sit for its final examination as the other stages are all exempted with CMA qualification. Therefore, with CMA, one can also save a considerable amount of money, which is very much beneficial for local students.

Now CMA qualification is recognized by all Government Corporations, Statutory Boards, State Banks and Government Owned Companies. Practical Training

Today, Dilip Krishnasamy is in Management HABIB Bank. He works as the Head of Compliance covering Sri Lanka and Maldives. He explains how he reached his present level.

From HSBC Bank, I joined HABIB Bank. CMA referred me to a qualified Institute to obtain my practical training. During the said training, I obtained qualitative as well as quantitative applications and practical experience too. In this training, I was able to perform very well. At present, I work for HABIB Bank as the Head of Compliance – Sri Lanka and Maldives. CMA qualifications and its guidance paved the way for my present achievements.

Future Endeavours

Dilip states as follows about his future endeavors

“By now, I have completed an MBA. My CMA qualification was very helpful in completing same. Similarly, I am hoping to complete my MPhil. Also, I hope to complete my ACCA qualification. The gateway to all these qualifications is CMA. Therefore, I would like to say that anybody who would like to be on the correct path should begin with CMA.”

After obtaining his CMA qualification, Dilip is still working together with CMA. He also joins the Strategic Level lectures of the CMA course.

Finally, as per Dilip’s analysis, the advice he gives the students who follow CMA is;

Whatever Examination you are reading for: If you have the qualities of; Hard Work Commitment Discipline You will be a winner. He further says that CMA creates and trains Professional Management Accountants with such qualities and releases to the field.
