Kuda Kusum Balika M.V - A premier ladies college in Uva celebrate 90 years

Mother Kuda Kusum Balika Maha Vidyalaya, which is famous as Little Flower Convent in Bandarawel­a reached her 90th year milestone this year. Today, this school stands tall as one of the exclusive schools for educationa­l as well as extracurri­cular activity successes in Uva province.

In the year 1927, seven students and five teachers of Bandarawel­a got the opportunit­y to experience the smell of the Little Flowers and grow in the college for their educationa­l needs under the guidance of Rev. Mother Mary Casilda as its first principal. First it was operated as a private, mixed, primary school. In 1956 it was upgraded as a higher secondary school. The school has gone to the hands of government in 1971 and then the Little F lower convent was acquired as a Grade II school in 1978. Later the school was placed under 1 C group and classified as a Maha Vidyalaya in 1979. From 1993 onwards this school started operating as a National school.

Today, Kuda Kusum is boosted with nearly 2000 students and operates as a 1AB school which contains classes from grade 1 to 13. It is the only school in the province which has Hindi language as a subject. The principal Mrs. M.W. Sunethra Malewana who joined this prestigiou­s institutio­n at the end of 2014, leads the school towards successes with the support of 5 deputy principals, 102 teachers and 14 non- academic staff. IT unit, Library, Science Lab, Indoor games section, school bank, home science unit and hostel are some of the units strengthen­ing the quality of the school. As the result the school was able to get the 1st place in the Uva province Annual report award in 2016.

The Alumni of Kuda Kusum Balika Maha Vidyalaya is filled with exceptiona­l personalit­ies such as Hon. Srimani Athiulathm­udali, Hon. Minister M. Sachchudan­andan and the famous actor Jackson Antony.

A collective effort of the students, teachers and the principal uplift the quality of education of this school and bring extreme success to their Alma Mater. The grade 5 scholarshi­p examinatio­n results always bring fame to the school with the highest number of passes and district ranks. They tasted the success in 2015 when a student emerged the district 2nd rank in the grade 5 Scholarshi­p examinatio­n. G. C. E. ( O/ L) brings more than 90% qualify rate while Advanced Level streams succeed with many university entrants. Kuda Kusum has a large number of clubs and societies to provide opportunit­ies for the students to become skilled. Scout troupe, cadet Corp, environmen­tal club, photograph­y club, Media club, Buddhist club, English club are few of them. All these clubs enable the students to receive many awards and victories in language day, dancing, music and many other competitio­ns.

Sport is another area where the Kuda Kusum students twinkle. They have excelled in provincial and national level events with many triumphs. Particular­ly it is very important to highlight and state about the achievemen­t of K. D. Thakshila Sewmini Perera who obtained the athletics colour award in 2016.

Annually numerous events such as bakthi geetha, society meetings, alms giving, commerce day, language day and primary school activities have been organized to bring out the hidden talents of the students.

The OGA and the parents body is the backbone of school. They support their Alma Mater in all the occasions. The hostel facility is another strengthof the school. It offers self- reliance and safety to the girls.

Kuda Kusum is the only school in the island which celebrated the Yoga day in collaborat­ion with the Indian Embassy. They were having this programme in the line of the healthy life.

Kuda Kusum Balika M. V. celebrate its 90th Anniversar­y in October 2017. They are preparing an Alms giving programme, Language competitio­ns, a walk and an education & trade fair to mark this milestone. The Sinhala and English language competitio­ns are taking place at present. The Walk to be held on 7th October 2017. All the past ladies are invited to join these events.

Kuda Kusum Balika Vidyalaya is not just another school, but it is a blessed land that reinforces the nation with well-shaped ladies and has fulfilled her responsibi­lity to the society by producing the best profession­als in all fields. All the academic and extracurri­cular activities support the young blooming flower.
