Divu­lapi­tiya Act­ing OIC up for iden­ti­fi­ca­tion pa­rade

The Negombo Chief Mag­is­trate or­dered the Act­ing Of­fi­cer In Charge (OIC) Crimes of the Divu­lapi­tiya Po­lice to be pro­duced in court on Tues­day for an iden­ti­fi­ca­tion pa­rade in con­nec­tion with the death of a sus­pect who al­legedly died af­ter be­ing tor­tured by po­lice.

The 50-year-old vic­tim had been in re­manded cus­tody at the Negombo Prison af­ter be­ing ar­rested by the Divu­lapi­tiya Po­lice. He was re­manded till Oc­to­ber 10 af­ter be­ing pro­duced be­fore the Min­uwan­goda Mag­is­trate in con­nec­tion with an al­leged rob­bery. How­ever, he had fallen ill on Oc­to­ber 4 and was ad­mit­ted to hospi­tal, where he later died. A post-mortem ex­am­i­na­tion re­vealed that death was caused by mul­ti­ple in­juries to the body.

Po­lice later ar­rested Act­ing OIC Crimes of the Divu­lapi­tiya Po­lice, Sa­man Priyanka in con­nec­tion with the in­ci­dent. Sev­eral other of­fi­cers at the sta­tion have al­ready been trans­ferred out to the Peliyagoda Po­lice as in­ves­ti­ga­tions con­tinue.
