“Insanity: doing the same thing over and over again and expecting different results”

We could all be a little insane at times. Doing the same routine everyday expecting an exciting life. Studying the same way and expecting the better results?

I’ve had my own fair share of being insane. But I recovered and learned.

I, was born on March 14, 1879, in Ulm, Germany, but grew up and obtained my early education in Munich, Germany. I was a poor student, and some of my teachers thought I might be retarded. So you see I was always a little loony if you may call it so. I was unable to speak fluently at age nine. I was yet fascinated by the laws of nature, experiencing a deep feeling of wonder when puzzling over the invisible, yet real, force directing the needle of a compass.

I began playing the violin at age six and continued to play throughout my life. At the age twelve I discovered geometry and was taken by its clear and certain proofs. I mastered calculus by age sixteen. When you are insane, a great gift comes with it; the gift of consistent hard work and curiosity.

My formal secondary education ended at the age of sixteen. I disliked school, and just as I was planning to find a way to leave without hurting my chances for entering the university, my teacher expelled me because apparently my bad attitude was affecting my classmates. I tried to enter the Federal Institute of Technology (FIT) in Zurich, Switzerland, but my knowledge of subjects other than mathematics was not up to par, and I failed the entrance examination. On the advice of the principal, I first obtained a diploma at the Cantonal School in Aarau, Switzerland, and in 1896 I was automatically admitted into the FIT. There I came to realize that he was more interested in and better suited for physics than mathematics.

I passed the examination to graduate from the FIT in 1900, but due to the opposition of one of the professors I was unable to go on to obtain the usual university assistantship. In 1902 I was hired as an inspector in the patent office in Bern, Switzerland. Six months later I married Mileva Maric, a former classmate in Zurich. We had two sons. Maybe Bern was my lucky place. Or let us call it sheer dedication and hard work. It was in Bern, too, that I, at twentysix, completed the requirements for my doctoral degree and wrote the first of my revolutionary scientific papers.

I am not even posing anything ridiculous when I may say, life is one insane ride.

“Great spirits have always encountered violent opposition from mediocre minds.”

There was not a single day where I wasn’t looked at as if I was out of mind. If you didn’t know, you may know now; every single one of us are insane and out of our minds in our own capacity. No one is supposed to be judged for their level of eccentricity. That is why I believe a little bit of insanity will help you imagine, innovate and create.

When you know you’ve been called names and thrashed down. You will realize your growth and your untapped potential. You will understand how limitless you are and that everyone else is trying to stop you.

Ah! Yes, I do sound utterly out of the world and you may even say I’m out of control. It’s all for the better.

Imagination is vital to help you grow. You imagine and you create. There is a cycle, and it’s important for your life. I’m not teaching you on how to be successful, I’m just guiding you on how you can achieve the best in life.

It is more important to be a man of value rather than a man of success. This clearly shows what you define success as.

What I want to get through to you is that, we are all a crazy bunch. Brains work in the most complex way and who is to say what the right way is. It is nature itself. It is quite alright to be out of your mind. Let go and achieve the best in life. Just be grounded enough to come back to reality once in a while!

Look deep in to nature, and then you will understand everything better. Albert Einstein. Written by Devuni Goonewardene Email any comments, criticisms and feedback to devuni@gmail.com
