Pathiraja’s ‘Swaroopa’ in cinemas Now
Dr. Dharmasena Pathiraja’s newest film ‘Swaroopa’ (Self Image) based on Franz Kafka’s story ‘Metamorphosis’ is now being screened at 4.15 pm (only one show) at leading cinemas including Regal Colombo. Lido- Borella, MetroNugegoda, Amity-Maharagama, Odean and City Cinema-Mt Lavinia and Himali Kiribathgoda at 4.15 pm.
The film revolves around Gregory Samson and his family of father, mother, sister assisted by a maid within the social transformations taking place in late colonial and early postcolonial Sri Lanka.
Situated within the contours of a rented apartment of a middle class family, the story mainly focuses on Gregory who is a travelling salesman for a pharmaceuti- cal company. He is the main provider of the family. Among his expenses Gregory bears the bulk of the financial responsibilities for the rent of the apartment, the violin lessons for his sister, and the general upkeep of the family. As a young medical representative who has to travel a lot. He forms relationships in his travels which do not seem to be lasting. One fine morning Gregory wakes up to find himself transformed into a giant insect. ‘Swaroopa’ stars W. Jayasiri, Nita Fernando, Thusitha Laknath, Reeni de Silva, Daya Tennakone, Wimal Kumara de Costa, Lakshman Mendis, Vishvajith Gunasekara and D. B. Gangodatenna. Behind the screen cinematography is by Donald Karunarathna, editor Elmo Halide and musical score is by Nadeeka Guruge.
The annual European Film Festival, a journey of exchanging and enriching culture through cinema, has reached a milestone this year as the much- awaited festival celebrates its 10th anniversary.
Featuring films from Czech Republic, France, Germany, Italy, The Netherlands, Poland, Romania, Slovakia, Switzerland and the United Kingdom, this year’s edition will kick off on October 13 and will last till October 17.
With the aim to promote cultural exchanges between Europe and Sri Lanka and understanding between the people of Sri Lanka and Europe, the festival will showcase 11 critically acclaimed films with daily screenings at 3.30 pm and 6.30 pm at the National Film Corporation theatre in Colombo. The festival is collaboration between the Delegation of the European Union to Sri Lanka and the Maldives in Colombo and the Embassies of the Czech Republic, France, Italy, the Netherlands, Romania, Slovakia, Switzerland, the Alliance Francaise de Kotte, the British Council, the Goethe Institute and the Polish Institute in New Delhi. In addition to international films, five short films by young Sri Lankan short filmmakers will also be screened during the festival.
