Peradeniya University preview for 1,500 CP A/L candidates

1,500 Science stream Students of the Central Province schools, aspiring to enter Universiti­es, were given a firsthand experience into University Education by the University of the Peradeniya (UoP).

UoP Vice Chancellor ( VC) Prof Upul B. Dissanayak­e addressing the students in the Science Faculty auditorium, said that, for the next 3 days, they would visit the various Department­s of Science, where they could access the work done in the Science Faculty and as a whole in the curriculum of University Education. He said that, though the University has not reached the top rungs of Internatio­nal rankings, yet it is within the top few and aspiring to reach the top.

Prof Dissanayak­e said that, when the 1st UoP VC Sir Ivor Jennings became the Chancellor of Cambridge University, and candidates interviewe­d for Research awards, those from the UoP were not interviewe­d. There was an uproar and many wanted to know why it was so. Prof Dissnayake said Sir Jennings had told them he knows the quality of the graduates coming from UoP. That is the University, he said, that they are sitting for this "Open Day" in Science.

Prof Dissanayak­e said he would be happy and proud if all the students present here would choose UoP for their Higher Education.

The students, along with their tutors, visited the Department­s of Biology, C h e m i s t r y, Geology Mathemat i c s, Molecular Biology, Biochemist­ry, Physics, Statistics, Computer Science and Zoology.

The Dean of the Faculty of Science Prof Saluka Kodituwakk­u, Pro f K. Samarasing­he, Prof Sanath Rajapakse and Dr Nanda Nalasooriy­a also addressed the opening sessions.
