Ferry Service for Gateway Students from Diyatha Uyana to School

Following a request made by Gateway College to assist the students to overcome time loss due to traffic congestion down parliament road, the Planning & Business Development Division of the Sri Lanka Land Reclamation & Development Corporation (SLLRDC) with the assistance of the Sri Lanka Navy has initiated a ferry service from Diyatha Uyana to the school in Rajagiriya. According to the MoU, SLLRDC and the SL Navy, will manage and operate the boat service for a fee that can either be paid termly or monthly.

This unique initiative has been made possible due to the beautiful waterway that is bordering Gateway College Rjagiriya which connects to the Water’s Edge. Gateway, recently invested in a spacious jetty that can be used for both berthing of the ferry and for rowing. Speaking at the launch, Dr. Harsha Alles, Chairman of Gateway said that the teachers and students of Gateway are excited with the prospect of getting to school from Diyatha Uyana in less than ten min- utes. He said that the students should consider themselves fortunate to begin and end the day passing through the most salubrious surroundings of Sri Jayawardenapura.

Mr. Asela Iddawela, the Chairman of SLLRDC said that the venture will not only provide an additional income to the organization but will also help to provide a good solution to a national problem of reducing traffic congestion during the rush hours. He said that by providing this service the SLLRDC can also reduce the canal maintenance cost.
