CH&FC Andriesz Shield Champs; Malay Ladies secure President's Trophy

The Colombo Hockey Associatio­n (CHA) organised Colombo League Hockey Tournament, which commenced in August, saw the completion of the 'A' Division matches last Sunday, at the Astro Turf, Colombo 7.

The 'A' Division had 5 Men's teams vying for the , while 4 Women's teams battled for the President's Trophy.

CH&FC team topped the 'A' Division and secured the 2017 Andriesz Shield, with Old Nalandians and BRC placed 2nd and 3rd respective­ly. Malay Ladies won the President's Trophy.

In the 1st match of the day between Gymkhana Club and O l d N a l a n d i a n s, O l d Nalandians took control from the start to defeat CH&FC 3-0. Jeewantha Edirisingh­e, Bodhika Dias and Pubudu Saranga sounded the board for the winners. The Women's League fixture between University of Jayawarden­apura and Malays saw both teams displaying equal skills throughout the match. After a close game, the Malays squeezed through to win 1-0.

In an aggressive game between Old Anandians and Gymkhana Club, the Anandians squeezed to a close 2-1 victory.

In the second match of the day in the Women's League, the Malay Ladies easily defeated Colombo Colts Club 4-0.

Earlier, the Malays Ladies drubbed Moratuwa University 9-0, on their way to the championsh­ip.

The CH&FC 'A'-BRC clash, a key match of the day, saw exciting Hockey by both teams. CH&FC entered the fray having registered victories in 4 matches. In battle where fortunes swung from side to side, a superior CH& FC scored 3 goals, while BRC retaliated and reduced the deficit with 2 goals, to go down 3-2.
