Singapore University rewards Mahamaya Girls with Environment Centre

-

The Singapore Nanyang Technology University has given a grant to Mahamaya Girl's College Kandy to set up an Environmental Centre, under the supervision of the Faculty of Engineering of the University of Peradeniya, and the College.

Mahamaya could be considered pioneers for highlighting pollution in the Kandy Lake over the years. The Mahamaya Girls, more than anybody else, watched the gradual and steady deterioration of the Kandy Lake, as it stands in front of the school, with its ever worsening stench and the murky green colour, over the years.

At every exhibition, within or outside the school, the Mahamaya Girls would exhibit their findings, in order to send a message, and now, they have been given an Environment Centre. Though late, now all schools in or outside Kandy could visit this Centre to learn about the environment and of the Kandy Lake.

Prof Ng Wuri Jern and Dr Adil Dhaila of Nanyan Universtiy were at the College for a first hand knowledge of what the Students were engaged in and were impressed by the students commitment towards conservation of the environment.

Mahamaya Principal Ms Indrani Vithanachchi was also given an award by the Minister of Science &Technology at the ASEAN Award ceremony held a t Amaya H o t e l , for Mahamaya's collaboration to preserve the Kandy Lake
