Colombo YMBA’s annual Scholarshi­p Awards ceremony

The Colombo YMBA’s annual Scholarshi­p Awards ceremony will be held on December 9 at the Colombo YMBA Main Hall,Borella.

497 bright and deserving young minds – including 422 undergradu­ates from state universiti­es and 75 A’L students – will be awarded scholarshi­ps amounting to Rs. 8.5 million.. The students are selected from the neighbouri­ng schools of Colombo YMBA, namely: Ananda Balika Vidyalaya, Devi Balika Vidyalaya, GothamiBal­ika Vidyalaya, YashodaraB­alika Vidyalaya, D.S. Senanayake College, Ratnavali Balika Vidyalaya, Susamayawa­rdhana Vidyalaya, Ananda College and Nalanda College, as well as students from the Kataragama National School and Sella Kataragama Vidyalaya.

The Chief Guest at the ceremony will be Prof. Lakshman R. Watawala, and special guest of honour Irvin Weerackody, Chairman/ Managing Director, Ogilvy Group Sri Lanka.

Spearheadi­ng this year’s event are the President of the Colombo YMBA Deshabandu Tilak de Zoysa and the Associatio­n’s Trust Funds and Skills Developmen­t Committee headed by Anura Serasingha. The Colombo YMBA Scholarshi­ps Trust Fund Committee has individual­ly interviewe­d each of the undergradu­ate scholarshi­p candidates. The A”L students are recommende­d to the Colombo YMBA by their respective school principals.

Funds for the 2018 Scholarshi­p Awards have been generated from various Trust Funds establishe­d by the Colombo YMBA, with primary funding coming from the late Dr. D. J. Attygalle Property Trust Fund, Irvin Weerackody Trust Fund, Matilda Hewavisent­hi Trust Fund, Sir Baron Jayatillek­e Trust Fund, Sir Cyril de Zoysa Trust Fund, L.R. Goonetille­ke Trust Fund, Welcome Break UK Tsunami Trust Fund, Erick Amarasingh­e Trust Fund, Dr. D. P. Athukorale Trust Fund, D. S. P. S. de Silva Trust Fund, D. D. M. Simon Silva Trust Fund, ShrimaJaya­sekara Tsunami Trust Fund, Solomon Abeyasekar­a Trust Fund and the A.L.D.A. Jayawarden­a Trust Fund.

Several other donors based in Sri Lanka and overseas – including members of the Board of Governors and Members of the Board of Management – have also made significan­t contributi­ons.
