Colombo YMBA’s an­nual Schol­ar­ship Awards cer­e­mony

The Colombo YMBA’s an­nual Schol­ar­ship Awards cer­e­mony will be held on De­cem­ber 9 at the Colombo YMBA Main Hall,Borella.

497 bright and de­serv­ing young minds – in­clud­ing 422 un­der­grad­u­ates from state uni­ver­si­ties and 75 A’L stu­dents – will be awarded schol­ar­ships amount­ing to Rs. 8.5 mil­lion.. The stu­dents are se­lected from the neigh­bour­ing schools of Colombo YMBA, namely: Ananda Ba­lika Vidyalaya, Devi Ba­lika Vidyalaya, GothamiBa­lika Vidyalaya, YashodaraBa­lika Vidyalaya, D.S. Se­nanayake Col­lege, Rat­navali Ba­lika Vidyalaya, Susamayaward­hana Vidyalaya, Ananda Col­lege and Na­landa Col­lege, as well as stu­dents from the Kataragama Na­tional School and Sella Kataragama Vidyalaya.

The Chief Guest at the cer­e­mony will be Prof. Lak­sh­man R. Watawala, and spe­cial guest of hon­our Irvin Weer­ack­ody, Chair­man/ Man­ag­ing Di­rec­tor, Ogilvy Group Sri Lanka.

Spear­head­ing this year’s event are the Pres­i­dent of the Colombo YMBA De­sha­bandu Ti­lak de Zoysa and the As­so­ci­a­tion’s Trust Funds and Skills De­vel­op­ment Com­mit­tee headed by Anura Seras­ingha. The Colombo YMBA Schol­ar­ships Trust Fund Com­mit­tee has in­di­vid­u­ally in­ter­viewed each of the un­der­grad­u­ate schol­ar­ship can­di­dates. The A”L stu­dents are recommended to the Colombo YMBA by their re­spec­tive school prin­ci­pals.

Funds for the 2018 Schol­ar­ship Awards have been gen­er­ated from var­i­ous Trust Funds es­tab­lished by the Colombo YMBA, with pri­mary fund­ing com­ing from the late Dr. D. J. At­ty­galle Prop­erty Trust Fund, Irvin Weer­ack­ody Trust Fund, Matilda He­wavisen­thi Trust Fund, Sir Baron Jay­atilleke Trust Fund, Sir Cyril de Zoysa Trust Fund, L.R. Goonetilleke Trust Fund, Wel­come Break UK Tsunami Trust Fund, Erick Amaras­inghe Trust Fund, Dr. D. P. Athuko­rale Trust Fund, D. S. P. S. de Silva Trust Fund, D. D. M. Si­mon Silva Trust Fund, Shri­maJayasekara Tsunami Trust Fund, Solomon Abeyasekara Trust Fund and the A.L.D.A. Jayawar­dena Trust Fund.

Sev­eral other donors based in Sri Lanka and over­seas – in­clud­ing mem­bers of the Board of Gover­nors and Mem­bers of the Board of Man­age­ment – have also made sig­nif­i­cant con­tri­bu­tions.
