“Panaimarakkadu” is one of the few Tamil feature films produced by a Tamil film-maker from the North after the the end of the war in 2009. As a result, the film provides the audience with a much-needed internal perspective that comes from within and which is based on the director’s lived-in experience of the North in the post war context.

“Panaimarakkadu” was first screened at the Jaffna Film Festival in September, 2017 and the film’s first screening outside of Jaffna will be in Colombo on the 5th of December.

The Centre for Poverty Analysis (CEPA) will be screening this film on December 5 as part of its post-war research and policy work with the objective of enriching research insights, policy debates and programmatic interventions on social cohesion and reconciliation.

The screening will take place at the Sri Lanka National Film Corporation (Tharangani Theatre) on Tuesday, December 5, at 4 p.m.

The screening will be followed by a moderated discussion with Kesavarajan Navaratnam (Director of Panaimarakkadu), Asoka Handagama (Film Director) and Vetrichelvi (Author & Poet based in the North).

The service this year is full of “different arrangements - modern and classical. We really try to communicate what we are singing and transfer emotions.” For example in ‘Do You Hear What I Hear?’ Sanjeev teaches the girls to try to embody each character in this lyrical grapevine and their interactions with the other characters are reflected in their singing. With eight years of training the choir Sanjeev humbly adds “I do a lot of different things but I primarily consider myself to be a teacher first.” The accolades apart, his most rewarding moments are when even his introverted students blossom, adding that this is largely seen when they shine at their carol services.

Look out too for their “complicated arrangement of ‘ Long time ago in Bethlehem’.”

The year has been exceptional for the Gateway choir which won a gold medal in the “Folklore with accompaniment” category in the Choir Games. St. Joseph’s College

Date : December 9 (Saturday) Time : 6.30 p.m. Venue : Fr. Stanley Abeysekara Sports

Complex Known for being a “good classical choir” St. Joseph’s College choir had to shift their service to the large sports arena in 1997 to accommodate the congregation of over 3000! One of the major events in the school calendar, this year the service will have the readings on a screen to create a more child friendly atmosphere. A repertoire of English, Sinhala, Tamil plus German, African and Latin carols and hymns feature in the service.

“We’re doing some beautiful classical pieces,” choir master Francis De Almeida says, mentioning Handel’s ‘For Unto us a child is born’ and John Rutter’s ‘Candlelight Carol’. At this year’s carol service 130 primary school children, with angel bands around their foreheads and cassocks, will be seated in the tiers above the stage. Adding to the powerhouse participation will be 65 students from the St. Joseph’s choir, 30 members of the Old Joes Choir and 40 teachers and backing by “Unique Sounds”. “The production is a huge affair,” Francis laughs. Their theme for the evening will be “Mysterium Fidei” (mystery of faith). “If you don’t have a mystery of faith we don’t have a religion,” he adds. Joining the over 200 choristers is the “Lumen choir singers” from Maradana - a choir of visually impaired elderly singers.

As they unfold the story of Christmas, Lasatha’s vision is to preserve the spiritual meaning of Christmas.

Simple decor, lamps and flowers and the ethereal beauty of the choir’s harmonies will make it “a magical evening” he adds. Date : December 10 (Sunday) Time : 5.30 p.m. Venue : Cathedral of Christ the Living Saviour choir (Bauddhaloka Mawatha) Under Choir Director Ishan De Lanerolle, the Cathedral’s carol service will feature the church choir with an interesting new accompaniment of the flute, a brass quintet, timpani and violin to augment the more traditional service Ishan reveals. “It’s important to remember Christ in Christmas” Ishan states adding that the “joy and promise of the birth of Jesus Christ” is what symbolizes the atmosphere of the service.
