ANC Education- Producing well-rounded individuals

-

Saumya Eldeniya, the newly elected Vice President of the ANC Student Council and the Charity Club of ANC, is a highly-motivated and outgoing student who has performed extremely well both in terms of academics and extracurricular activities. As a second-year student of ANC following a degree in International Business and Marketing under the Northwood University Degree Completion Program, Saumya has maintained a high GPA, despite spending a great deal of time on various extra-curricular activities.

During her school life, she acted as the president of several school clubs of Gothami Balika Vidya l aya, including the Commerce Society, Broadcasting Unit, and English Literary Association – and also served as the School Head Prefect in 2013/ 14. Her passion for oriental music and media made her take part in both interschool music and announcing competitions, bagging numerous awards at the national level. Being an avid swimmer, she also held the captaincy of the school’s water polo team following her victory as the runners up of the Mike Sirimanne M e m o r i a l Wa t e r Polo Championships. Considering her outstanding academic and nonacademic achievements, by the time she graduated from school, she claimed the title of ‘The Most Outstanding Student of the Year’ in 2015, marking her name in the school history.

Being a determined and farsighted student, Saumya opted to follow a US business degree from Northwood University at ANC after her A/Levels, aiming a successful career in the corporate.

Below are the excerpts from the interview with Saumya…

How do you balance your academic work and extracurricular activities?

From school days, I used to engage in sports and school clubs and societies. Also at ANC, I have maintained a high GPA level despite all my non-academic work. This fine balance helped me build my selfesteem, gain self-assurance and win seemingly impossible challenges. At ANC, I have received valuable advices, continuous support and guidance from lecturers and the management to achieve what I have achieved today. ANC helps students measure success with continuous improvements, setting the bar high to challenge our thinking and induce innovation.

What made you want to be an office-bearer of the ANC Student Council?

Even when I was growing up, I was very keen to mingle with others – mostly to play and enjoy life. I learnt and achieved great many things by participating in many different academic and non-academic events. This changed my entire outlook and attitude towards life - and made me an open minded individu- al. I believe, ANC has created a very good platform for us through its clubs and societies to learn the art of living and working together, allowing us to build our characters as individuals.

What made you choose a degree in International Business and Marketing?

I always wanted to join a corporate career. I did my A/Levels in commerce stream and soon after A/ Levels, I joined ANC as ANC offered a fine array of business degrees from a leading US business university. My father highly recommended ANC and thought it would give me good exposure. Since I did my A/ Level in commence, ANC also offered me some exemptions.

What made you choose the Degree Completion Program in Sri Lanka without transferring to

the US to complete your degree?

It is super convenient to complete a US degree here in Sri Lanka for an affordable cost. Quality and standards of the facilities and services provided at ANC are also on par with international standards – so that we can experience the same quality education as in Northwood University in the US and receive the same qualification. Besides, my parents were a little reluctant to send me abroad for studies.

What are your future aspirations?

By the end of next year, I will be graduating – and then, I will go strength to doing my MBA at ANC to finish it off in one go. For now, I have plans to start my internship with MAS at the end of this year. The ANC Coop Education Program also helps students get paid internship opportunities with corporate giants like Dialog, Unilever etc., where students can receive handson experience and find potential employers.
