Dr. Bandula Wijay receives “Global Citizen” award

Houston Chapter of the United Nations Associatio­n recently honored Dr. Bandula Wijay with the p re s t i g i o u s “Global Citizen” award for his notable achievemen­ts and services in numerous fields.

Born in Sri Lanka and currently a resident in Houston, Texas, Dr. Wijay has become an eminent inventor, scientist, and engineer. Especially, he is a leading inventor of cardiovasc­ular devices with more than 25 US and internatio­nal patents on medical devices. Among them are the vascular stents and the devices in angioplast­y. Besides, Dr. Wijay is also an entreprene­ur, who has founded four companies that develop device in the field of medicine.

Dr. Wijay’s service to society is marked by his generous support to Sri Lanka in many fields. He promotes science and technology in education in Sri Lanka by linking eminent American and internatio­nal scientists with their Sri Lanka counterpar­ts. To facilitate this objective, Sri Lanka Government has rightfully appointed Dr. Wijay as the Ambassador at Large for Science Technology and Innovation for Sri Lanka. Dr. Wijay also serves as Honorary Professor in Clinical Medicine at the Ko t e l aw a l a D e f e n s e University, directing research collaborat­ions in medicine and bio-engineerin­g.

Besides, Dr. Wijay and Mrs. Wijay have contribute­d towards social progress in Sri Lanka by offering financial support to talented and needy students. In Houston, Texas, the Wijay family funded and establishe­d Houston Buddhist Vihara in 1998, an institutio­n that continues to provide an outstandin­g service to the Sri Lankan and American Buddhist community in Texas.
