Realms of Life Sciences 2017

-

A pioneer of education in Life Sciences, Spectrum Institute of Science and Technology ( SIST) has been functioning successfully in Sri Lanka for the past 17 years, thereby gaining an unparalleled reputation for giving students the opportunity to acquire reputed foreign degrees right here in this country, with no compromise on quality.

In a generous effort to share the intricacies of the workings of undergraduate programs offered here, SIST opened its doors to school students islandwide, for the annual science exhibition- Realms of Life Sciences, held on the 3rd, 4th and 5th of October, 2017 in the institute premises at No. 100, Bauddhaloka Mw, Colombo 4.

The event was graced by Prof. Th a k s h i l a S e r a s i n g h e, Chairperson of the National Science Foundation (NSF), who was the Chief Guest and declared open by the Chairman of the Institute, Mr. Jayanthan Kulasingham. Invitees included school students from both State and International schools island-wide as well as interested members of the general public.

Students, and visitors alike, were systematically taken on a tour around the institute where the undergraduate students had arranged the classrooms and the labs to include sophisticated 3D exhibit models which were supplemented with simple and concise explanations that the young students could easily relate to.

The tour comprised visits to classrooms which included the theory for 1) An overview of Microbiology, 2) Central Dogma of Life and 3) Human Physiology. Subsequently, the tour was extended to the laboratories that include: 1) Molecular and Cell biology, 2) Plant Tissue Culture, 3) Biochemistry and 4) Microbiology. All four of the labs contain state of the art facilities and advanced technological devices that were displayed to the students. In addition to having the working principles explained to them, the correct usage of the equipment was demonstrated to the students who were also allowed to gain practical experience in certain techniques.

SIST is proud to have hosted an event of such calibre which aligns with its vision and mission to spread knowledge in Life Sciences and to create a human capital. Students are well- equipped with not only theoretical knowledge but also with hands-on practical experience that enables a new generation of future scientists to bravely take on the fast-paced world of today.
