Medical equipment worth Rs 1b for Peradeniya, Eastern Universiti­es

The Faculty of Allied Health Science and the Faculty of Health Care Sciences of the Eastern University will soon receive more Medical equipment worth Rs 1 billion (Euro 5 million) as part of Austrian Aid.

The Cabinet has approved the purchase of the equipment from a chosen company, following a financial proposal submitted by the UniCredit Bank of Austria.

Higher Education & Highways Ministry Secretary D.C. Dissanayak­e said that, on the instructio­ns of Minister Lakshman Kiriella, steps have been taken to purchase the lat- est equipment manufactur­ed in Europe, from funds received under the agreement.

Project Director P. G. Jayasinghe said that action has been taken to divide the equipment b e t we e n the 2 Universiti­es, equally.

The 2 Faculties commenced in 2006 with the least amount of resources.

The decision to purchase the equipment was taken after considerin­g the requiremen­t to provide teaching and learning processes and medical equipment and tools to improve standards of the courses offered by the 2 Universiti­es, similar to that of other universiti­es.

The Ministry noted that favourable attention should be paid regarding the quality of the Medical and other related sectors of these universiti­es, to ensure there is no decline of the recognitio­n acquired regarding Medical Science Degrees of Sri Lanka, in the internatio­nal arena.

Meanwhile, Mr Jayasinghe said that Minister Kiriella has recommende­d necessary steps be taken to obtain required Medical equipment for the Medical Faculties planned to commence at Wayamba, Sabaragamu­wa and Moratuwa Universiti­es in the future.
