For the first time the reputed degree awarding higher educationa­l institutio­n in New Zealand – The New Zealand Tertiary College (NZTC) is offering programs to qualify as a registered teacher in Early Childhood Education by studying partly in Sri Lanka. Teaching is an ideal profession, high in demand all over the world especially in developed countries, teachers are respected and well recognised and they are remunerate­d well. Out of all teaching profession­s, teaching pre-school children is an absolute joy as the tiny tots learn basics required for formal education. Teaching children at preschool level has gone through radical changes from yester years. The Early Childhood Teacher is now a highly recognised profession­al and in all developed countries to enter the profession one has to graduate with a specially designed bachelor degree.

Though it is a profession more suited to ladies, it is becoming increasing­ly popular amongst males too. Teaching the very young kids using newer techniques to gradually adapt to formal education is a challenge but is a very pleasant one.

To enter the profession as a teacher in any developed country one needs to have a teacher registrati­on. This is so in New Zealand too. In New Zealand, one must graduate with at least a bachelor degree accredited by the teacher board of New Zealand. NZTC has two programs that enable students to obtain teacher registrati­on The Bachelor of Teaching – Early Childhood Education (ECE)

The Graduate Diploma of Teaching – Early Childhood Education (ECE) NZTC is offering the opportunit­y for students from Sri Lanka and the Maldives to graduate with either of the above degrees through part studies in Sri Lanka all on Full Time Study basis. The programs are thus most suited for school leavers though there are opportunit­ies for mature students (below 30 years) too to enrol.

Students with GCE A/L 3 passes in any stream and a credit pass for English at GCE O/L can enrol the program as stated below;

1 year Pre Degree course in Sri Lanka and upon successful completion follow the 2 years Bachelor of Education (ECE) degree awarded by NZTC in Sri Lanka and complete the 1year 3 months Post Graduate Diploma of Teaching – ECE in New Zealand

1 year Pre Degree course in Sri Lanka and upon successful completion follow the 2.5 years Bachelor of Teaching (ECE) degree awarded by NZTC in New Zealand Students with GCE O/L 6 credit passes in any subjects including a credit pass for English can enrol in the above program by following a 6 months Accelerate­d Foundation course in Sri Lanka.

The Pre Degree and the Foundation courses are NZTC approved and the academic delivery of both courses are conducted by the Ladies College - Institute Profession­al Studies (LCIPS) at its premises in Colombo through a team of well qualified academics headed by a Professor in the field of Early Childhood Education. Ladies College a premier girl’s school in Colombo has been conducting teacher training for several years through its vocational training division. This division is now registered as Ladies College - Institute Profession­al Studies (LCIPS).

Edlocate a leading Australian, New Zealand and Malaysian based university and higher educationa­l institutio­ns representa­tive in Sri Lanka is providing all the administra­tive facilities for the programs handling enrolments in Sri Lanka to placements in New Zealand at NZTC and obtaining NZ student visa.

One of the pre requisites to enrol in the Bachelor Degrees of Education (ECE), the Bachelor degree in Teaching (ECE) or the Post Graduate Diploma in Teaching (ECE) is to have English communicat­ion skills at high level demonstrat­ed through IELTS ( Academic) or through PTE ( Academic). The pre- degree course at LCIPS has inbuilt coaching for students to be prepared to sit either of the two examinatio­ns with confidence and qualify.

Whilst studying in New Zealand students are legally entitled to do casual work up to 20 hours maximum a week when the educationa­l institute is officially in session. There is no restrictio­n on hours to work during vacation times. The current minimum wage rate is NZD 15.75 per hour.

Upon successful completion of the Post Graduate Diploma of Teaching (ECE) or the Bachelor of Teaching (ECE) students are able to register as Teachers (ECE) in New Zealand. They are also eligible to apply and obtain the Graduate Job Search work visa for one year which enables them to formalise teacher registrati­on and engage in employment with no restrictio­ns. The registrati­on as an Early Childhood teacher enables students to apply for residency if they wish to live and work in New Zealand.

This NZTC degrees of Bachelor of Teaching and Post Graduate Diploma in Teaching are both approved by the Australian Children’s Education and Care Quality Authority ( ACECQA) – the body which oversees the national quality framework for the Australia early childhood sector, meaning that NZTC graduates wishing to apply for Early Childhood Teacher (ECT) status in Australia can do so without having to apply separately for an assessment of their qualificat­ions.

Students who wish not to proceed with the two options to qualify with degrees awarded by NZTC and wish to enter the Early Childhood Teaching profession in Sri Lanka or the Maldives OR those who do not achieve the English standards required to enrol in NZTC courses following the Pre Degree course are provided with a pathway to qualify with a well recognised teaching diploma with NVQ accreditat­ion.
