Sri Lankan-led UK firm produces organic coconut flour

Coconut Miracle (Pvt) Ltd, a UK-based corporate entity located in West Sussex with its manufactur­ing arm in Sri Lanka which has successful­ly marketed extra virgin coconut oil, has also embarked on manufactur­ing and marketing ‘Coconut Miracle’ organic coconut flour which is uniquely different from all other wheat alternativ­es.

Shani Ahangama hailing from Sri Lanka’s southern region floated the UK registered Coconut Miracle (Pvt) Ltd in 2010, marketing ‘Coconut Miracle’ extra virgin coconut oil across the UK and other countries. She is now strengthen­ing the ties with her motherland.

Organic coconut flour is naturally low in digestible carbohydra­tes with no gluten – fewer carbohydra­tes than soy or nut flours while high in fibre and a good source of protein. Unlike other fibres, coconut flour can be used as a flour to make delicious bakery products and main dishes that are much tastier than other wheat alternativ­es, she said.

The Coconut Miracle Foundation supports the local community by providing village folk especially women with work and also assist educationa­l facilities to needy children with school books and other amenities. Their initiative for 2016/2017 was to sponsor a child’s education and their chosen ‘Miracle Child’ is Sulochana from the SOS Children’s Villages Programme.

According to Coconut Miracle, coconut products are considered to be ‘Super-food’ with the promise of health and wellbeing and this has been the focus of their company. Grown in the coconut triangle of Sri Lanka, they harvest naturally grown, organic coconuts and use traditiona­l methods of production which are raw, cold pressed thereby retaining natural nutrients and antioxidan­ts. Coconut Miracle natural coconut butter is a popular healthy alternativ­e to butter/ spread/sautéing.

With a daily production of 5 metric tons the company’s research team continuous­ly seeks improvemen­t in the 100 per cent organic process and developing their product range to the changing customer needs and solicits suggestion­s to customise their products and packaging.

Ms. Ahangama said that the Dr. Edward Group of UK has analysed coconut oil and the findings showed that it contains good fat that can be added to the diet. Though it is a 90 per cent saturated fat, it contains medium-chain fatty acids (MCFAs) which improves health. (QP)
