Gateway emerge undisputed football champs

Garnet House dominated to win the Overall Champions Award at the colourful Asian Internatio­nal School’s athletic meet held at the NCC Grounds recently.

In this well organised meet champions Garnet House with 993 points clinched the glittering champions trophy with Topaz House ( 883 points), Sapphire House ( 711 points) and Amethyst House ( 659 points) occupied the 2nd, 3rd and 4th positions respective­ly.

In the House Decoration competitio­n it was Garnet House with the best decoration won the award while Amethyst House occupied the 2nd position. Garnet House too won the Cheer Leading Competitio­n with a well organized rhythm of cheering.

Garnet House athletes dominated in the track too by winning the Individual championsh­ips in the Girls Under 11, Under 13, Under 17 and Under 19 age groups while their Boys solitary individual award was won in the Under 13 age group.

Ms. Amritaa De Silva, former Miss Sri Lanka graced the occasion as the Chief Guest and Cheer Leading Judge.

Gateway College emerged champions at t he Under- 1 8 I n t e rInter national School Football Tournament held at Cooray Park from January 24 to 29. The Gateway boys dominated throughout the tournament scoring 18 goals in five matches, whilst conceding none.

Such a strong performanc­e was down to the dominance of the Gateway midfield, consisting of captain Dwayne de Mel, Binitha Chandrasen­a, Malidu Gallage and Samunu Kaggodaara­chchi, who showed great control and possession throughout the tournament. They also created plenty of chances for striker Areeb Atheek, who was awarded Player of the Tournament, after scoring five goals on course to winning the championsh­ip. Aaqib Imthiaz was awarded Goalkeeper of the Tournament for maintainin­g a clean sheet throughout the tournament.

In the group stage, Gateway beat Alethea 2-0 and Lyceum Nugegoda 2-0. The quarter- final was one sided with Gateway getting seven goals. In the semis, Gateway overcame Royal Institute 2-0 and at the final they beat Lyceum Panadura comfortabl­y with a score of 5-0. Top scorers in the tournament were Areeb Atheek with five and Dwayne de Mel with three goals.
