International English Language Testing System, commonly known as IELTS is a language testing system that grades your English language skills. It is based on the four language skills; speaking, writing, reading and listening. The exam is essential for academic as well as visa requirements. However, as per the requirement, the score needed will differ. Similarly, the exam is available in two main areas: academic and general. The first step is to identify which exam you need, and what score is required.

Achieving the required score for the university of your choice can be a challenge, and requires preparation. It is important to understand that the student’s level of knowledge will differ from one skill to another. Therefore, this must be taken into consideration when preparing for the exam. The below tips will give you a head start towards your IELTS journey.

1. Study vocabulary

The need to use the right word at the right place can often make the difference needed in clarity. In order to know the ‘right word’, a vast vocabulary is needed. The more words you know, the better your vocabulary will be. Constant reading, listening and exposure to the language will enable your vocabulary to be enhanced. Using new words frequently will enhance fluency. Research shows that it takes from 10 to 20 repetitions to make a word part of your daily speech.

2. Read, read and read

Reading is a skill that’s cannot be understated. However, understanding what is being read is essential. A credible English dictionary should be used in order to support your reading.

3. Enhance your writing skills

As you read and learn new words, thereby enhancing your vocabulary, the knowledge should be used to develop writing. A suggested activity is to compose the definition of the word, and sentences using the word. Words should thereafter be related to other words that you know.

4. Exercise fluency and pronunciation

Practise makes perfection in fluency and pronunciation. By repeatedly using new words with the right pronunciation, the learning is reinforced and will lead to greater fluency.

5. Get the right support system

In order to pass IELTS successfully, a support system is beneficial. Having the right IELTS trainer who has the credentials and experiences, as well as a institute with te resources such as a library and standby tutors is important.
