Men's and Women's teams leave tomorrow
Eight prominent players have been picked to represent Sri Lanka at the 19th Asian Senior S q u a s h Team Championships scheduled to be held at South Korea from March 21 to 25 at the Cheongju International Squash Stadium in South Korea.
The Sri Lankan Men’s and Women’s National teams are represented by teams of four players each with the captaincies are on the shoulders of Ravindu Laksiri and Mihiliya Methsarani. The Men's team, led by Laksiri, includes Shamil Wakeel, Gihan Suwaris and schoolboy Druvinka Perera. Laksiri, Wakeel and Suwaris are known for their accolades in squash locally and globally while Perera, of Royal College, will attempt to stamp his class in his maiden country representation.
The Women's team, led by the versatile Methsarani, includes well experienced Fathoum Izzadeen and schoolgirls Kasuni Gunawardane and Zameera Deen. Skipper Methsarani and Izzadeen are known for their brilliance and skills as reputed players here and abroad while Gunawardane of Visakha Vidyalaya and Deen of Holy Family Convent Bambalapitiya, are two players who have shown great promise as future stars.
Both teams come under the watchful eyes of Chaminda Thalagala, the Head Coach, who will be assisted by Team Manager, Wing Commander Eranda Geeganage and Lady Chaperon Sadamini Wickramasinghe. Sumithra Wanasinghe will join the contingent as the Observer representing the Ministry of Sports.
In the Men's competitions, 16 countries will vie for the main title including Sri Lanka, Hong Kong, Japan, Pakistan, Malaysia and hosts South Korea. Sri Lanka will be among 11 teams in the Women's competitions where top contenders Hong Kong, Pakistan, Japan, Malaysia and South Korea are in. The Sri Lankan contingent will leave the country tomorrow.
