“If you’re in Silicon Valley, you tend to do better than expected”
When speaking about successful businesses and startups, Silicon Valley comes to mind. Apple, Facebook, Google and Netflix all have their Silicon Valley location in common. It is the birthplace of innovation, and the grounds in which many paradigm shifting ideas are conceptualized.
“The entire ecosystem is nurturing and helping companies within Silicon Valley realize their promise on a more guaranteed basis than anywhere else in the state,” said co- author Scott Stern of the Massachusetts Institute of Technology and the National Bureau of Economic Research in Cambridge, Massachusetts.
Speaking about the advantages of being in Silicon Valley, Russell Hancock, president and CEO of San Jose- based Joint Venture Silicon Valley, a policy organization focused on regional issues says that the local is more than mere hype. “It seems intuitive but it is nice to have social science back us up,” Hancock said. “We have a habitat here that creates a supportive environment,” he said. “And we have the infrastructure — the VC, the lawyers, and accountants. They’re all within spitting distance.”
Advantages in Graduating near Silicon Valley
Silicon Valley has two advantages. First, “there is a higher initial quality of start- ups — people are being drawn there, they graduate from its universities, they are more ambitious,” Stern said. “Silicon Valley supercharges that effect, helping them along, so they deliver on their promise” he added.
They found that the highest- quality start- ups are centredon research institutions, such as the California State Universities, which each host regions of entrepreneurial quality.
Empowering You to Start Your Own Venture
“Research centres attract extremely bright, curious, energetic and ambitious people — people who want to change the world in a positive way. Increasingly, they want to realize their dreams in their own ventures, not buried in a large company,”
“With more education on how to start and build companies being evangelized at places like Stanford, SRI and many other research institutions, it’s no longer so intimidating to researchers to start up a venture based on their breakthrough science and technology,” said Steve Ciesinski, president of Global Partnerships at Menlo Park’s SRI International and a lecturer at the Stanford Graduate School of Business.
“If you’re in Silicon Valley, you’ll tend to do better than expected,” he said in conclusion.
