Musicians, fans mourn for Avicii

Popular DJ Avicii - real name Tim Bergling-was found dead in Muscat, Oman on Friday, April 20 2018.

Avicii was a Swedish DJ and musician and was born in Stockholm on September 8, 1989. Bergling began making music when he was just

18 years old, writing and remixing tracks in his bedroom. He quickly began gathering attention as he thrilled club goers with his catchy hits, flashing lights and soulful collaborations.

He shot to fame with his Levels single in 2011 and followed it up in 2013 with the award-winning hit ‘Wake Me Up’.

He became one of the world’s most successful DJs and a big name in the musical genre known as EDM, or electronic dance music. Avicii was a pioneer for the EDM genre and collaborated with artistes including Madonna, Robyn, Major Lazer, Daft Punk a nd Coldplay.

In 2016, he retired from live performances after suffering multiple health issues including acute pancreatitis due to drinking alcohol. Just two years ago, he had his gallbladder and appendix removed, and he cancelled tour dates in order to recover.

No details were released about his death, but his publicist said: ‘It is with profound sorrow that we announce the loss of Tim Bergling, also known as Avicii’.

“The family is devastated and we ask everyone to please respect their need for privacy in this difficult time. No further statements will be given’.

According to local media outlet Gulf News, two autopsies have been carried out and there is no criminal suspicion regarding his death.

Avicii’s heartbroken elder brother, David was reported to have flown to Oman to ‘search for answers’.

He chose the name Avicii - which means ‘the lowest level of Buddhist hell’ - because his real name was already taken on MySpace.

Avicii released what would be his final EP last fall ‘Avicii (01)’.
