UNHRC tackles the issue of education for young refugees at SLMUN 2018
Anjalee Ranasinghe and Matthew Milhuisen
The United Nations Human Rights Council ( UNHRC) is a United Nations body whose mission is to promote and protect human rights around the world. It has 47 members elected for threeyear terms on a regional group basis and headquarters based in Geneva, Switzerland. It was established on March 15, 2006. The main goal of UNHRC is to investigate allegations of breaches of human rights in UN member states, and addresses important thematic human rights issues such as freedom of association and assembly, freedom of expression, freedom of belief and religion, women’s rights, LGBT rights, and the rights of racial and ethnic minorities.
This year UNHRC within SLMUN 2018 hopes to bring to light the right to education and aims to spread awareness of this very right looking from a different aspect, the right to education the refugee children seem to lack in possession. Delegates in the UNHRC will debate on one of the biggest issues that a refugee child faces. The total lack of education provided to them. However, education is seen as a luxury and this is what UNHRC stands against, as opposed to it being a basic human right. The purpose of this topic is for delegates to address how this right can be enforced for refugee children worldwide.
The scope of this committee is best suited for both beginners and experienced delegates who are knowledgeable and are interested in human rights and social issues. Delegates should be able to be innovative thinkers, good negotiators and debaters with utmost diplomacy puting forth debates and resolutions appropriately.
