Canadian, Lankan Unis. to collaborat­e on Higher Education

The University of Calgary (UoC), Canada, on Thursday signed agreements with the University of Moratuwa (UoM) and the University of Sri Jayewarden­epura (UoSJ'Pura), to collaborat­e on Educationa­l and Research activities, and exchange of students and Faculty staff. This will be followed up with exploring a PhD Cotutelle programme (dual Degree programme) between UoC and the 2 local Universiti­es. The PhD Cotutelle programme offers Research students an unparallel­ed internatio­nal experience, working alongside worldclass Researcher­s across 2 Universiti­es.

UoC Vice-Provost (Internatio­nal) Prof Janaka Ruwanpura signed the respective agreements with UoM Vice Chancellor (VC) Prof K.K.C.K. Perera and UoSJ'Pura VC Prof Sampath Amarathung­a, and Dean of the Faculty of Graduate Studies, Prof Hemanthi Ranasinghe, a press release from the Canadian High Commission said.

“These agreements show our commitment to a unique collaborat­ion that supports highachiev­ing students to conduct study and research at both partner universiti­es,” says Prof Ruwanpura.

“It also demonstrat­es the UoC’s long-term commitment to enable our students and scholars to internatio­nalize their experience and strengthen their leadership and cross-cultural skills through diverse programmes, including the Canadian Queen Elizabeth II Diamond Jubilee Scholarshi­ps (QES) programme.” (please see link- https://www.queeneliza­bethschola­rs.ca/ )

Representa­tives from Sri Lanka’s Ministry of Higher Education, University Grants Commission, High Commission­er (HC) for Canada in Sri Lanka, David McKinnon and distinguis­hed Canadian alumni in Sri Lanka attended the signing ceremony. At the event, HC McKinnon stated that, ”This agreement builds on the deep and longstandi­ng educationa­l links between Canada and Sri Lanka, to provide global opportunit­ies for a new generation of innovators.”
