Photographic Excursion to Horton Plains

-

The Photographic Art Club of S. Thomas’ College, Bandarawela recently took part in an excursion to Horton Plains which was a part of the practical aspect of the club. Twelve students along with the Master in Charge, Mr. J.K.C.J.P. Manchanayake took part in this excursion on the 07th July 2018. The aim of this excursion was to create an awareness of nature and capture its beauty in all its glory.

Mr. Manchanayake, a past student of renowned photographer Mr. Lal Hagoda was instrumental in initiating the Photographic Art Club of the College in 1999, but due to the high cost in equipment not many students actively took part in sessions conducted by the club. But after a relatively silent period, the club once again was again reinitiated in 2015 and as at present there a quite a number of students who actively take part in sessions which are based theory and practicals. The club was initiated with the aim of introducing the students to photography at a very early age along with the finer aspects of the field. Sessions are held after school which is conducted as a course and at the end of the course certificates are awarded to the students.

The recent excursion to Horton Plains was also a part of the practical exercises conducted by the club. The students reached their destination in the early hours of the morning and spent up to nearly ten hours capturing the beauty of nature through the lens of a camera. They were also able to learn about the fauna and flora of the region which is an important bio catchment area of our country. The Photographic Art Club also hopes to have an photographic exhibition during the third term.
