HFC Convent, Kurunegala retain title for 11th successive year

Holy Family Convent, Kurunegala retained the schools netball title for the eleventh successive year after clinching the overall title at the 27th Milo All-Island Schools Netball Championsh­ip held at the Bogambara Stadium in Kandy last weekend.

The Kurunegala Familians qualified to secure their eleventh successive overall netball title after reaching the Under-19 and Under-15 age category finals and winning them both comprehens­ively. In addition the overall champions impressed in the Under-13 age category by finishing off at top, despite the games were played as ‘friendlies’. Musaeus College annexed the Under-17 championsh­ip.

In the Under-19 Division ‘A’ final Holy Family Convent Kurunegala beat Kalutara Balika Vidyalaya comprehens­ively by 37-17 as Musaeus easily overcame Hillwood College by 30-19 in the Under-17 Division ‘A’ final.

In a repeater of the Under-19s, Holy Family Convent Kurunegala defeated Kalutara Balika Viduayala by 23-13 to win the Under-15 Division ‘A’ title, while their Under-13 team overcame Holy Family Convent Kalutara by 11-6.

Holy Family Convent Kurunegala bragged three of the four individual awards on offer as Methma Dayaratne emerged the Most Outstandin­g Player of the Under-19 age category. Disni Tania Kumari won the Most Outstandin­g Player of the Under-15 category while the award for the Under-13s went to Akithma Abeysinghe. The Under-17 individual award on offer was won by Randuli Rupasinghe of Musaeus College.

In the final tally, Holy Family Convent Kurunegala topped the list with 70 points while Musaeus College finished second with 40 points. Kalutara Balika Vidyalaya accumulate­d 30 points to finish third overall. The Kurunegala lasses first won the title in 2008 and went on to win successive­ly ever since.

In the Division ‘B’ Bandarawel­a Maha Vidyalaya clinched the Under-19 championsh­ip after beating Rathmalwin­na Maha Vidyalaya by 16-10 as Holy Family Convent Kadawata beat Bandarawel­a Maha Vidyalaya 18-12 in the Under-17 final. The Under-15 title was won by Buvanekaba­hu Vidyalaya Kandy, who thrashed Sujatha Balika Vidyalaya Matale by 22-3.

The tournament was organised and conducted by the Sri Lanka Schools Netball Associatio­n in collaborat­ion with Nestle` Lanka’s Milo for the 27th consecutiv­e year.
