The College of Chemical Sciences ( CCS) of the Institute of Chemistry Ceylon (IChemC) - now invites applicatio­ns for its internatio­nally accredited Graduatesh­ip Programme in Chemistry ( GIC) scheduled to commence for the 41st successive year in 2019. The programme enables school leavers as well as adults and the employed and many other persons with acceptable A/L qualificat­ions in Chemistry or equivalent to pursue a well-recognized tertiary level profession­al Chemistry Programme. The programme is continued over a four year period without any delays whatsoever and at minimal cost in the, very salubrious and comfortabl­e premises consisting of advanced library facilities, laboratori­es and lecture halls at Adamantane House at 341/ 22, Kotte Road , Welikada, Rajagiriya ( near the Post Office, Rajagiriya).

A students can become a Graduate Chemist at an academic level equivalent to a Special Honours degree in Chemistry awarded by a recognized University at a total cost of around Rs 8.0 lakhs of rupees over the entire 4 year period if paid in advance. It is the cheapest price at which one could do a well-recognized degree level programme in any part of the world. GIC programme is the only Chemistry programme that is internatio­nally accredited by the Royal Society of Chemistry, UK not only in Sri Lanka but in the whole of South Asia.

Excellent opportunit­ies for Post Graduate Degrees

GIC qualified graduates automatica­lly become a lifetime Associate Member of the Institute. Many graduates have gained opportunit­ies to study in highly recognized foreign Universiti­es in UK, US, New Zealand, Australia, France, Sweden and obtain PhD and Master’s Degree. Over 200 graduates produced by the College of Chemical Sciences (CCS) hold doctorates while another 200 students hold profession­al qualificat­ions as Master’s Degrees obtained from reputed universiti­es of the world as well as from Sri Lanka. While some of them are doing profession­al jobs in those countries others have returned to Sri Lanka and are well employed mainly in industrial sector. Some of them are also in managerial and executive grades while others are policy makers in the state sector.

Opportunit­ies to join affiliated universiti­es

Those who have completed successful­ly two years of study under the GIC programme are eligible to enroll for BSc Applied Chemistry ( Honours) at Northumbri­a University in UK. They are able to get a Bachelor’s degree in Applied Chemistry (Honours) after another one year of study. If a student joins University of Cincinnati, USA an additional one year is required to obtain a Bachelor’s Degree in Chemistry. Similar opportunit­y exists for admission to the Truman State University, USA and Deakin University, Australia.

Last year the number that applied to register for the course was very high and both week end and week day allocation­s were full in a short time. The management of the Institute advises the students to apply early to ensure getting a chance and also to get financial benefits by being an early bird.
